New Building Manager for Wilson Hall Is your office too cold? How about too hot? If you would like your office to be at a temperature that is just right, contact John Kent, the new
A Fermilab employee of almost 15 years, John Kent became the new building manager of Wilson Hall on March 14. Kent initially started at Fermilab as an ES&H technician and has been a building manager in the fixed-target area for the past nine years. "When I first arrived at Fermilab, I used to look back at Wilson Hall and think that I would like to be the building manager over there some day," Kent said. "Wilson Hall is the flagship for the lab, and I'm very excited about my new role."
As building manager, Kent plans to take a very proactive approach to the job.
"John's previous experience here at the lab will serve him well as he
assumes the role of Wilson Hall Building Manager," said Vic Kuchler, Deputy Head of FESS.
"I look forward to working with John, and I'm sure that over time, all Wilson Hall
occupants will come to know and appreciate his enthusiasm."
And with air conditioning season around the corner,
Kent knows that one of his first challenges will be keeping everyone cool and
comfortable in Wilson Hall. Kent's office is located in the Wilson Hall

The philosopher William James once said that "if you wish to upset the law that all crows are black, you must not seek to show that none of them are - it is enough to produce a single white crow". Likewise, if you wish to test the so-called CPT theorem, according to which a world constructed of antimatter behaves exactly the same as one constructed of matter, you do not need to create an entire "antiworld". It would be quite sufficient to show that the frequency of just one transition in a simple anti-atom differs from the value of the same transition in the corresponding ordinary atom.

At low levels noise can be irritating, but at high levels hearing can be
damaged. As you might expect, hearing loss gets worse with exposures that
are louder or longer. How loud is too loud? If you need to raise your voice
to be understood at a distance of three feet, you should think about doing
something. The typical hearing loss victim has been exposed on a daily
basis to very loud noises (yelling-level plus) for a number of years without
using hearing protection.
If you regularly work in noisy areas, you are likely a participant in Fermilab's hearing conservation program. If you are among these 174 people, you know that annual training and a hearing test are required. If you are not a participant, but are concerned about your exposure to noise, you should contact your division/section ES&H organization. At Fermilab, regularly-occupied areas that exceed OSHA's noise limits are clearly posted. Whether or not you are in the lab's hearing conservation program, your best action to minimize the risk of hearing loss is to use hearing protection. In most cases, a supply of earplugs is maintained in posted areas. Plugs and muffs can also be obtained from Fermilab's stockroom. Though noise exposures occur at work, at least as many people participate in non-work activities that present greater exposures. This is especially true when using engine-powered equipment for yard maintenance or recreational transportation. Again, the use of hearing protection, as well as other protective equipment, is often the best course of action in these cases.
