Labwide Turnout Highlights Focus on Computer Security
Irwin Gaines
Irwin Gaines Talks About Basic Computer Security (click on image for larger version)
Fermilab's response to Computer Security Awareness Day exceeded all expectations on Tuesday, March 8. "We expected about 50 people for the first session, and ended up with nearly 150," said Irwin Gaines of the Computing Division, one of the event's organizers. "I ran out of notecards for the names."

Computing Division stresses that computer security begins with each individual user. "Computer security is the responsibility of each person in their daily job," said CD's Mark Leininger. "We have all sorts of fancy tools that can help us, but in the end it is the person sitting in front of the screen that is our greatest asset."

Those attending the One West sessions on "Basic Computer Security," "Desktop System administration," and "Fermilab System Administration" will have their online training requirement marked as complete. All presentations were videotaped and are available on the Visual Media Services website as streaming videos. CD has posted copies of all talks and handouts.

Brown bag seminars will be scheduled throughout the year to stress the importance of security and its usefulness for employees. "We wanted to make it clear that computer security is here to help you do your work effectively," Gaines said. CD also passes along its thanks to all those involved in organizing the event, and to everyone who attended the sessions.

Fermilab tries novel experiment: talking to neighbors
By William Grady
Hopes of landing the next big project in particle physics, a multibillion-dollar linear collider that would smash atoms in a 25-mile-long underground tunnel, has officials at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory looking for support from a new source: the public.

Fermi scientists have not always seen the need to involve their neighbors, but the lab near Batavia wants to avoid the sort of public backlash that erupted in the late 1980s over a proposed $11 billion Superconducting Supercollider, which was never built.

Director's Corner
Good Morning!
Mike Witherell
At the all-hands meetings I held on February 17, I said that I expected to announce a program of staff reduction. Yesterday I sent a memo to all Fermilab employees initiating that program.

The Fermilab budget has been continuously below inflation over the last several years, which makes it necessary to reduce staff here through layoffs. The target reduction for this program is 90 employees. With yesterday's memo we are starting the voluntary phase of the program, which, if necessary, will be followed by an involuntary phase to meet the target.

Ray Orbach, Director of the DOE Office of Science, said here recently that Fermilab will remain the principal U.S. laboratory for particle physics beyond 2010. We have a strong long-range plan for the laboratory, and I believe that Fermilab will receive increased support to follow this plan. I am working with the next director, Pier Oddone, to move aggressively toward building the accelerators and experiments needed for the laboratory and for U.S. particle physics in the future.

Accelerator Update
March 11- March 14
- During this 72 hour period operations established two stores that provided the experiments with approximately 54 hours and 5 minutes of luminosity
- QPM system repaired
- NuMI losses beam due to LCW problem
- Operators save store 4041
- Antiproton Source has kicker problem
- Cryo technicians save store 4042

Announcements
Building Better Bones
Back by popular demand, Building Better Bones will be offered on March 23 at noon Curia-II. A brief lecture on Osteoporosis will be followed by a free bone scan for any woman attending the lecture. Jody Springsteen, BSN, CRRN cover osteoporosis risk factors, diagnosis and prevention.

Scottish Country Dancing
Scottish Country Dancing has moved back to Kuhn Barn on the Fermilab site and will meet there on Tuesday, March 15. Instruction begins at 7:30 p.m. and newcomers are always welcome. Most dances are fully taught and walked through, and you do not need to come with a partner. Info at 630-840-8194 or 630-584-0825 or folkdance@fnal.gov.
