Batavia City Council Passes Resolution to Support Fermilab Budget Increase
The resolution emphasizes the important role Fermilab plays not only in the local community but also in the general advancement of science. The resolution states in part: "The Batavia City Council…wish to go on public record as encouraging all federally elected officials to review and reinstate budgetary funding levels that sustain and enhance the scientific opportunities put forth by the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory." Accelerator Division's Jim Volk, a member of the Batavia City Council, introduced the resolution. "This gives our congressmen something to take to Washington and show that this community really supports the lab," he said. "We hope that this resolution will help boost funding back to its original levels."

From MSNBC, March 7, 2005 Biggest particle collider a step closer 50-foot magnet lowered into place as installation begins GENEVA - Installation of the world’s largest particle physics collider began Monday with the lowering of a massive, superconducting magnet into the circular tunnel housing the new research facility that will draw scientists from all over the world, a spokeswoman said.
The 17-mile tunnel, housing the pipe-like accelerator, is big enough for a subway train and is located 150 to 500 feet under the Swiss-French border.

From Science Daily, March 8, 2005 The Neutrino Underground: Experiment Will Fire Trillions Of The Ghostly Particles Through The Earth An international consortium of 200-plus scientists, engineers, technical specialists and students has formally inaugurated an ambitious new effort to probe the secrets of neutrinos, the elusive subatomic particles that have played a central role in the origin of the universe, the evolution of the Sun, and much else.
Where do neutrinos come from? What are their masses? And how do they change from one kind to another? The researchers will attempt to answer such questions with the newly completed NuMI-MINOS experiment, which will send pulses of neutrinos on a 450-mile path through the Earth.

Sensitive Item Inventories Reminder Sensitive item inventories were due on Friday, Feb. 4. Business Services, who handles the inventories, would like to thank all who have returned their inventories, and reports that 93.6% of Fermilab assets have been accounted for as of March 8. "It's an annual inventory that is required by the DOE, and we try to get it completed as quickly as possible. We still have some work to do,"
Fermilab needs to keep track of sensitive items, and any items unaccounted for must be reported to Security. Everyone who is a property custodian is responsible for completing their inventory and obtaining a verification signature from their supervisor.
