YOU DON'T NEED A TICKET! All Are Invited to NuMI/MINOS Dedication Today at 2:30 p.m. | ||

All lab employees, users and contractors are invited to today's NuMI/MINOS
dedication ceremonies at 2:30 p.m. in Ramsey Auditorium — you don't need a
ticket! Different-colored tickets will be issued to lab and government officials,
collaborators, contractors on the project and members of the press, but only
because sections are reserved for them to be seated together.
Otherwise, come one-come all! The lab urges car-pooling for those coming from other areas of the site. Extra parking will be available the Lederman Science Education Center. The Horseshoe will be reserved for parking by participants in the ceremony. Give yourself time to be seated in the auditorium by 2:15 p.m., when a slide show will begin, depicting the history of the project. The dedication program will start promptly at 2:30 p.m. Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert and Director of the Office of Science Raymond Orbach will dedicate the NuMI beam and the MINOS experiment. Congressman James Oberstar of Minnesota, representing the district where the Soudan Underground Laboratory is located, will also be among the speakers. Overflow seating will be available only after the auditorium is completely full. And remember-you don't need a ticket! Just be sure to arrive early, and car-pool with other employees if you're driving. - Mike Perricone

Computer Security Awareness
Day Clarified: It's Voluntary | ||

An announcement in Wednesday's Fermilab Today indicated that attendance at some of Computer Security Awareness Day's activities is required. That is not the case. Computer Security Awareness Day is an opportunity for everyone to learn things about computer security. Participation in any activity is voluntary. We have planned the activities to be informative, useful, and hopefully fun. Please try to attend.
Brown bag seminars will cover many topics of general interest, including "Dangers of Spyware and Phishing," which explains some of the latest tricks being used to get your personal information. "Basics of Grid Computing" will present an overview targeted at people who have never used the GRID. "What Happens During a Computer Security Incident" will go behind the scenes during a security incident and what the lab's response team does. If the lab network seems mysterious, "You and the Lab Network" will provide a good introduction. Several of the brown bags are computer security courses that appear in your training requirements summary in the TRAIN database. If you choose to attend one of those brown bags your training profile will be updated to reflect the fact that you have completed the course. If you don't like tests, this is a good opportunity to get credit for taking the course without having to take the online test.
There will also be continuous short video presentations displayed in the atrium on various computer security topics, as well as an "Ask the Expert" kiosk where staff will answer any questions you have. The brown bags will be held in WH1W and Curia II.

After the dedication, join the fun at the lab-wide party in the Atrium from
3:30 p.m. to 6: 30 p.m., hosted by Universities Research Association, Inc.
Buona Catering will provide the food, and party organizers have ordered
more food to avoid running out. Music will be provided by Roy Rubinstein and
the Chicago Hot Six, along with DJ Paul Gentry.
Be sure to bring your invitations to enter the raffle drawings. Prizes include Arts Series tickets, Fermilab logo wear and gift items, and gift certificates to Chez Léon, Benigan's, Chili's, Applebee's and Borders Books. There will be extra invitations on hand for any users or employees who did not receive one. There will be several raffle drawings during the party, but you must be present to win a prize. From CERN Courier, March 2005 CMS cavern ready for its detector On 1 February 2005, the cavern for the CMS detector at CERN was inaugurated in a ceremony attended by many guests, including the Spanish and Italian ambassadors to the United Nations and representatives of the construction companies.
The hand-over of this cavern, a gigantic underground structure 100 m underground near the village of Cessy in France, marks the end of the large-scale civil-engineering work for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. The second of the new caverns for the LHC experiments, the CMS cavern is the result of several years of work by a consortium of Italian, Spanish, British, Austrian and Swiss civil-engineering companies. Problems arising from the local geology made it a spectacular feat of engineering.

Cafeteria Closing Early Today The Wilson Hall Cafe will close at 1:00 p.m. on Friday in preparation for the lab-wide party, which will be from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the Atrium.
