E-Week at Fermilab Promotes Engineering Awareness | ||

To some people, an engineer is a math whiz who wears thick glasses and carries a
slide rule at all times. Engineers at Fermilab, participating in National
Engineers' Week, are working to change that stereotype through education and
outreach to the community, and especially to young people. "The number one goal
of E-Week is to raise awareness," said Vic Kuchler of FESS and Chairman of the
Engineering Policy Committee which organized Fermilab's E-Week. "At Fermilab,
we're at the stage of uniting the engineering community here so that we can be
in a position to expand our outreach program in coming years."
As in any field, engineers feel the responsibility to promote their profession. "We want people to understand what we do," said Kuchler. "There are many different kinds of engineers, and kids need to be aware of the possibilities. The quality of their career decision depends on the information they use to make it."
To improve on the success of E-Week for next year, the Engineering Policy
Committee will form a subcommittee to organize the event.
If you participated in any of the E-Week activities, the committee
encourages you to give feedback
on your experience. Any suggestions on
increasing the appeal of activities would also be helpful.
"I would personally like to thank all the people who worked so hard to put this
together, and all the people who participated. Participation is essential to the
success of our engineering outreach."

Press Release, Berkeley Lab, February 22, 2005 Director Announces New Berkeley Lab Senior Management Team BERKELEY, CA—Director Steve Chu of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab), which is managed by the University of California for the U.S. Department of Energy, has announced the Lab’s new senior management team that is part of UC’s proposal to continue its management under a new DOE contract for which it is competing. Chu, who has been Director since Aug. 1, has chosen Graham Fleming, an internationally recognized spectroscopist who has been serving as Physical Biosciences Division Director at Berkeley Lab, to be his Deputy Director. Fleming would succeed Pier Oddone, who announced in December that he will be leaving to become fifth director of the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Illinois, effective July 1.
Chu also announced the appointment of two new Associate Laboratory Directors (ALDs) to go along with the three already in place. Paul Alivisatos, who has served as Materials Sciences Division Director at the Lab since 2003 and heads the Lab’s Molecular Foundry program, will be ALD for Physical Sciences. David McGraw, Division Director for Business Services, has assumed the ALD for Operations position.

You may want to consult an MSDS when selecting products during the work-planning phase of your project or task. If you are using a material for the first time or using an old material in a new application, you should first obtain and review a copy its data sheet. In fact, it is a good idea to obtain an MSDS before the product is procured, since it is not unusual to find that there are often safer and more environmentally friendly substitutes for the material you thought you needed. Substitutes can even be easier to use, more effective, and less expensive. Some common Fermilab examples are: Instead of organic solvent such as acetone and methylene chloride, use citrus-based cleaners. Intead of epoxy floor sealers use water-based floor sealers. And instead of lead-containing paints use unleaded paints. Once a material is brought into the workplace, everyone who uses it should review the MSDS. A wealth of information is provided in a convenient format that may actually help you avoid an undesirable exposure or injury.
