The newly established John Bardeen Engineering Fellowship at Fermilab is now accepting applications. The fellowship is designed to provide entry-level opportunities for outstanding engineering graduates who are interested in working in a cutting edge research environment. Radio frequency systems, superconducting magnets, mechanical systems are but a few of the opportunities Fermilab provides for engineering fellows.
After noticing a decline in recruitment of new engineering graduates at Fermilab, Ralph Pasquinelli, an engineer in the Accelerator Division, worked with the Director's office to establish the fellowship. "The lab has always had programs for physicists such as the Wilson, Lederman, and Peoples Fellowships, but there has never been a program that routinely recruits engineers," Pasquinelli said. "Engineers are vital to the laboratory. We need a fellowship that guarantees we will have a steady stream of young top-notch engineers at Fermilab."
Applicants must be recipients of a Masters or PhD in engineering and should rank in the top quarter of their graduating class. A thesis consisting of an independent study must have been a significant part of the graduate degree, and candidates must apply within one year of graduation. FESS Operations Increases Luminosity More and more occupants of Wilson Hall recently reported that they were working in the dark. While some professed this a natural state, FESS Operations realized that there was a less esoteric reason for the fading of the light. It was time for Wilson Hall to have its regular three-year re-lamp. With over 10,000 light fixtures in the building, this was no small undertaking. Why not just change the bulbs as they burn out? "Changing the lights as they
FESS/Ops uses a standard florescent 32-watt bulb that has a life expectancy of
20,000 hours. As the bulbs reach the end of their life, they begin to fail at a rate that
makes it more economical to change all of them out at once. FESS/Ops started re-lamping
Wilson Hall in November 2004 and just finished in January 2005. Some of the work
was done in off-hours to minimize disruption, but most of the work was done during
normal working hours. FESS/Ops appreciates everyone's patience and understanding
when the "Bringers of the Light" came calling.

Dennis Hastert Jr., of the Illinois 14th Congressional District, will officially launch the MINOS neutrino experiment during dedication ceremonies at the Department of Energy's Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory on Friday, March 4, 2005.
The dedication will take place at 2:30 p.m. in Wilson Hall's Ramsey
Auditorium.
