Fermilab Family Open House Draws 2,000 for Physics Fun

From babies in strollers to their grandparents, about 2,000 people of all ages enjoyed science at the Fermilab Open House last Sunday afternoon. As part of the World Year of Physics, Fermilab's Education Office invited visitors to explore interactive exhibits, talk with scientists on the 15th floor, watch cryogenics shows and presentations by famous historical scientists and tour the Linac.

Adrienne Worreoo of Roselle saw an article on the Open House in the Daily Herald and came with her husband and daughter. "We've been here once before several years ago," she said. "This is a very nice event. We went to the cryogenics show, and that was very fun."

Visitors received free copies of Quarks Unbound, symmetry and Quantum Universe, as well as World Year of Physics/ Fermilab puzzle rulers. "We wanted to let parents and their kids see what goes on here," said Spencer Pasero of the Education Office. "We wanted to get across some of the understanding of how science works and how to investigate something you can't see."

Much of the financial support came from an anonymous donor to the Fermilab Friends for Science Education. "We had volunteers from Saturday Morning Physics, teachers, Friends of Fermilab board members and docents help out with the hands-on activities," said Marge Bardeen, head of the Education Office. "Sometimes Fermilab goes out to the neighbors in the community, but this time we invited them to our home, and everyone had a great time."

- During this 72 hour period, Operations established two stores that provided approximately 18 hours and 34 minutes of luminosity to the experiments
- Operations received permission to power the Main Injector and to run beam in all machines
- TeV separator and MI Septa problems delayed shots

Science meets fun at Fermilab open house
Albert Einstein, science experiments and the promise of things being blown up drew about 1,800 people to Fermilab in Batavia Sunday.

The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory held a Family Open House complete with tours, presentations and plenty of hands-on experiments.

FY 2006 Budget Request for Science Education Programs
The Department of Education's Mathematics and Science Partnership program would grow by more than 50 percent under President Bush's FY 2006 budget request, but a substantial portion of the program's funding would be targeted strictly to improving secondary school mathematics. At NSF, the foundation's Mathematics and Science Partnership program would be cut by almost 25 percent, with no funding for new awards in FY 2006.

I am in Washington attending the meeting of the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP). This was a difficult meeting in the wake of the FY 2006 budget request and the cancellation of the BTeV project.

Robin Staffin included in his talk a transparency called "What's next for Fermilab." In it he said:

"We now look forward to working with Fermilab management to develop the strongest possible future for the laboratory as well as for the overall HEP program.
The laboratory's Long Range Plan has laid out a broad and exciting program for the next decade, centered on the International Linear Collider, significant new initiatives in neutrino physics, the LHC physics center, and particle astrophysics and underground experiments.
We are committed to maintaining Fermilab as one of the world leading scientific facilities."

I spoke to HEPAP about the future of Fermilab and HEP. Among other things I said:

"I will work closely with Pier Oddone over the next few weeks to develop an alternative plan for the continuing evolution of Fermilab. The scientific opportunities are great and we need to have a strong HEP program at U.S. accelerators. The Fermilab long-range plan is an excellent starting point. We will use it as a guide in plotting a new future."

I will communicate more to you about discussions at the HEPAP meeting later this week.

Brown Bag Seminar Today
There will be a Brown Bag Seminar today from noon to 1:00 p.m. in Curia II. Jody Springsteen, a nurse with the Kane County Health Department, will present "Building Better Bones."

Fermilab Blood Drive
The next Fermilab Blood Drive will be February 21 and 22 from 8:00 am to 2:00 pm on WH Ground Floor NE. Schedule an appointment online. Walk-ins are welcome!

Travel Center Tour Deadlines
The deadilne to sign up for the Wonders of Iceland tour - August 17 is February 17. Registration is accepted after this date if there are seats. If you would like more information on these tours contact the Recreation Office.

Scottish Country Dancing
Scottish Country Dancing will be moving back to the Kuhn Barn on the Fermilab site beginning this week, on Tuesday, Feb. 15. Instruction begins at 7:30 p.m. and newcomers are always welcome. Fermilab Association of Rocketry
The Fermilab Association of Rocketry is having its monthly club meeting on February 16, 2005 at 5:00 pm in the lower level of the village barn. There will be a winter rocket building session after the meeting. If you have something you want to build, bring it with you. Or just come, hang out and talk about rockets!
