ES&H Section Holiday Schedule | |

During the coming winter holiday, the lab's Fire Department, Security Department,
and Communications Center will remain on duty. Therefore, personnel
should continue to dial x3131 for any onsite emergency. However, other
ES&H Section functions/services will be curtailed since many workers will
be on vacation. In particular, the Medical Department will be closed from
11 a.m. on 12/23/2004 through 7 a.m. on 01/03/2005.
During this period the Fire Department will substitute for the Medical
Department in dealing with onsite injuries. Anyone experiencing even
non-serious work-related injuries should report to the Fire Department
just as they would report to the Medical Department on a normal workday.
Fire Department personnel will evaluate the injury, administer necessary
first aid and then do one of the following:
Injured workers should inform offsite medical personnel whether they believe their condition is work-related or not. In addition, any employee who incurs an occupational injury/illness should notify the Medical Department as soon as possible. If the office is closed, leave a voice mail message at 630-840-3232 and/or send an e-mail to medical_office@fnal.gov.

From Interactions.org News Wire, December 17, 2004 CERN confirms goal of 2007 start-up for LHC Geneva, 17 December 2004. Speaking at the 131st session of CERN Council today, the Organization's Director General, Robert Aymar, confirmed that the top priority is to maintain the goal of starting up CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) in 2007.
Preparations for the LHC project are advancing well, with half of the most
technologically challenging components - the cold masses for the dipole
magnets that will steer high-energy protons around the LHC's 27 kilometre
ring - having been delivered to CERN. In October the new transfer line
that delivers protons from the Super Proton Synchrotron to the LHC tunnel
worked at the first attempt. The line is based on 540 magnets supplied by
the Budker Institute for Nuclear Physics in Novosibirsk, and has been set
up with the help of a team from this Institute.

Solar glare presents a significant risk to drivers during the winter months.
The sun is lower to the horizon, which increases the likelihood for direct viewing.
The people living west of Fermilab are probably aware of this problem.
In addition, the glare from highly reflective snow and ice can cause near
complete, albeit temporary, loss of vision.
Drivers should take appropriate precautions to ensure their safety, as well as the safety of others on the road.

The story on the MINOS magnetic coil in the Friday issue incorrectly
identified the group that installed the coil. John Voirin and his crew, the PPD
mechanical installation group, accomplished the task. Leon Beverly is the floor manager
in the MINOS service building. Fermilab Today regrets the error.

December 13-15 - During this 48 hour period Operations established two stores that provided approximately 18 hours and 51 minutes of luminosity to the experiments - The TeV suffered a quench due to a separator spark - Store 3853 had a luminosity of 54.6E30, which is the highest luminosity since shutdown
