Farewell to Linc Read | ||

After 37 and a half years, the Accelerator Division's Linc Read will
retire on December 28. A Fermilab pioneer, Read joined Fermilab
on June 15, 1967. Last Tuesday, more than 100 Fermilab employees came
to honor him at a coffee reception,
reading farewell letters and presenting him with a scrapbook.
Deputy Director Ken Stanfield highlighted Read's many achievements. Read, who holds badge number 005, worked with founding director Robert Wilson on what was at the time only a project, before the lab even existed, and when the government did not yet own the land. "Linc has an enormous talent for taking on incredibly amorphous tasks, and doing them well to the benefit of all of Fermilab," said Stanfield. "Linc is one of those people who would see that there was a job to be done and do it without worrying about who got the credit," said former associate director Rich Orr in his farewell letter. Read said he looks back on his experiences at Fermilab with affection, and emphasized his appreciation for the supportive environment. "I think of Fermilab as a spirit of community," said Read. "To everyone, keep up the good work. And thank you."

From The New York Times, December 10, 2004 Bush Names New Energy Chief to His Second-Term Cabinet By DAVID E. SANGER WASHINGTON - President Bush named Deputy Treasury Secretary Samuel W. Bodman today to be head of the Energy Department, filling one of the last openings in his second-term cabinet.
Mr. Bodman "has shown himself to be a problem-solver who knows how to set goals and knows how to reach them," Mr. Bush said at a ceremony in the Roosevelt Room.

Slipping on ice or snow is a major cause of winter accidents in the Midwest. Below are suggestions from Fermilab ES&H personnel that are offered to help you deal with this seasonal problem.
Ray Lewis (AD ES&H) warns that ice- and snow-covered surfaces are difficult to deal with because they are widespread and hard to assess. Last winter an AD employee slipped on ice that was covered by a fresh dusting of snow. Avoidance and/or removal are the obvious keys to prevention. Greg Mitchell (BSS and FESS SSO) advises use of "secure footing" in winter conditions. Don't expect to walk normally: take smaller flat-footed steps and wear appropriate footwear. Also, be more observant of ground conditions. Is that a wet surface or "black ice" that you are about to walk on? Keith Schuh (PPD ES&H and Building Management) notes that many buildings are provided with containers of salt near their entrances. Building occupants should toss out a scoop of salt onto ice and snow near entrances. This can be particularly helpful where building managers cannot get to multiple entrances in a timely manner. Jack Hawkins (LSS SSO) recommends that people hold onto railings or other stable items, especially on stairs. People should also be aware that icy patches can thaw during the day and refreeze at night. Watch for this problem on slopes where runoff from melting can occur. Repeated treatments with salt and/or sand may be needed.
Rich Ruthe (TD SSO) advises people to keep one hand on their vehicle as they get out to stand up. This will provide stability in the event that they have stepped onto a slippery surface. For walking, Rich recommends rough-soled footwear and shuffling to move.
