National Academies Study: EPP2010 Sally Dawson Explains Sally Dawson, a Brookhaven physicist, is vice-chair of the EPP2010 and chair of the Executive Committee of the Division of Particles and Fields of the American Physical Society. Particle physics addresses some of the most basic questions in science and the
Every ten years, the National Research Council of the National Academies conducts decadal studies of different areas of physics. The last study of particle physics was chaired by Bruce Winstein of Chicago and was completed in 1998. The new decadal study (EPP2010) will lay out the grand questions of particle physics. This committee is charged to "identify, articulate, and prioritize the scientific questions and opportunities that define elementary particle physics". The new study is chaired by Harold Shapiro, the president emeritus of Princeton, and an economist and expert in bio-ethics. About half of the members of the EPP2010 committee are non-particle physicists. The committee and its charge are available online.
The first meeting of the EPP2010 committee was held in Washington, D.C.
on Nov 30 and Dec 1 and focused on introducing the non-particle physicists
on the committee to the questions of particle physics and on discussions of
how to set scientific priorities in general. The meeting led off with a
trio of physics talks by Joe Lykken (Particle Physics on the Edge), and
Chris Quigg (Coming Revolutions in Particle Physics), of the Fermilab
theory department, and by Persis Drell (Strategies for Discovery), of
SLAC. All of the talks from this meeting are posted online.

Frank Linde Starts as New Director of NIKHEF On December 1, Frank Linde became the new director of NIKHEF in Holland. Appointed in July by the Foundation for Fundamental Research of Matter, Linde takes over from Interim Director Karel Gaemers, who was appointed when Jos Engelen became the scientific director at CERN. Linde's appointment at NIKHEF is for five years, with the
Born in Oosterbeek, Holland, Linde studied physics in Utrecht and received his
Ph.D. in 1988 from the Rijksuniversiteit Leiden, based on research he did for
NIKHEF at SLAC in California. After that he was on and off in the Netherlands
(NIKHEF and Universiteit van Amsterdam), and abroad (Carnegie Mellon
University in Pittsburgh, 1988-1991 and CERN in Genève,1991-2000). Linde is
also the program manager for the Dutch contribution to the ATLAS
detector. He also actively contributes to outreach activities for
high-school students, and is currently involved in the Dutch activities
for the World Year of Physics 2005.

From The Chicago Tribune, December 7, 2004 Unusual cancer clinic to reopen at Fermilab By William Grady An unusual cancer-treatment clinic, which closed after struggling to attract patients and funding, plans to reopen next month with a new partner and renewed interest in research at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory.
Tucked into a corner of the sprawling high-energy physics facility near Batavia, the low-profile clinic had treated more than 3,100 patients since 1976 using subatomic particles called neutrons produced by Fermi's linear accelerator.

Open House Kicks Off Particle Astrophysics Activities This afternoon, the Fermilab Particle Astrophysics Center will hold an Open House for all employees and users on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall from noon to 4:00 p.m. "I hope everyone at Fermilab will stop by to get acquainted with the new Particle Astrophysics Center," said Rocky Kolb, the Center's new director. The six Particle Astrophysics Center groups will show videos, display posters and present experimental equipment related to their work. Coffee and tea will be available. The posters will remain on display until Friday afternoon. At 4 p.m. today, Michael Turner will present the Fermilab Colloquium on "The Big Questions in Cosmology." Beginning Thursday, Fermilab hosts a 3-day workshop to inaugurate the Particle Astrophysics Center: Fundamental Physics from Galaxy Clusters.
