FESS Sets a New Safety Record
The Facilities and Engineering Services Section reached a milestone Saturday by beating its 1999 record of 302 consecutive days -- 304 as of Monday morning -- without an OSHA DART Lost Time injury. Section head David Nevin said all those

involved deserve credit, from Director Mike Witherell down to the individual employees.

"It's a real achievement of the individual employees who have taken the idea of safety, and internalized it, making it part of their everyday work ethic," Nevin said, adding: "None of this could have happened without the leadership and support of the Director."

Nevin said that making good on the pledge contained in FESS' 1998 Sign Up for Safety meeting, which set new, higher standards of safety, was not easy, for a section that performs some of the lab's most hazardous tasks - such as facilities maintenance, complex mechanical and electrical equipment maintenance, as well as plowing roads during snow storms. "If you look at the OSHA list of most common causes of injuries, such as falls, electrical shocks, pinch points," said FESS Senior Safety Officer Greg Mitchell, "we're encountering all those hazards hourly."

The 1998 "FESS Sign Up For Safety" initiatives and its subsequent renewal in 2001 made a difference, Nevin said, because of the commitment each employee took on to be responsible for his or her own safety as well as for the safety of those around them. Specific programs were implemented, such as the yellow "Missing Link" suggestion box, and the weekly "Toolbox" meetings with crafts people and Roads & Grounds personnel. Nevin also credited the outstanding support received from all laboratory divisions and sections for the No-Maintenance Zones program, which focused on the elimination of hazardous conditions encountered by those performing maintenance on their equipment.

Nobel Prize winners stuggle to explain work to public
WASHINGTON - Nobel Prize winner Frank Wilczek doesn't particularly like it when his wife, Betsy Devine, compares his work to Dungeons and Dragons, the popular role-playing strategy game.

But it was the only way Devine, who holds a master's degree in engineering, knew to bridge the intellectual chasm between her husband's work and Washington reporters invited to have coffee with the 2004 American Nobel laureates this week.

Safety Tip
Winter Cornering
Winter Driving
Do you know what the most common type of winter driving mishap is at Fermilab? According to Security Captains Chuck Morrison and Rick Oropez, they are single vehicle accidents in which drivers go too fast through turns and slide off the road. Unless the vehicle rolls over, personal injuries and vehicle damage are usually minor. The trip, however, is usually delayed and there is a cost for professional towing since the vehicle is often stuck. The two most common locations for a slide off the road type accident are outbound Pine Street between A Road and the Science Center and the Swenson Road curve near the pond at DZero. However, any turn on slick pavement can present a hazard. Here are some suggestions to keep your vehicle from sliding off a slippery road this winter:

  • Reduce your speed and drive smoothly.
  • Allow longer braking distances. Give yourself extra room and use gentle pressure on the brake pedal.
  • Avoid sudden actions when cornering. This includes hard braking, quick turning, sudden acceleration, or shifting a manual transmission.
  • Perform one action at a time: accelerating, braking, or turning. Trying to do two things at once can reduce your control.
  • Be ready to respond to a sudden unexpected slide. If your vehicle begins sliding, gently let off the accelerator and turn in the direction you want to go.
  • Don't let four- or all-wheel drive give you a false sense of security. Although these drive systems can provide extra traction in many situations, they offer no advantage on icy surfaces.
  • Do not use cruise control in icy conditions.
Have a great day and let's work safely all week!
