Inventors Wanted
Fermilab technology has had important implications for such applications as
Magnetic Resonance Imaging and proton therapy. To increase awareness of the
possibilities open to researchers to patent and commercialize their inventions,
the laboratory is sponsoring the seminar "Technology Transfer -- Developing an
Idea"
on Monday, Nov. 8.
The Technology Transfer seminar takes place every two years. "The seminar is
meant to offer a path forward to anyone who works here who feels they have an
invention that may be patentable," said Fermilab's Deputy Chief Counsel Gary
Leonard.
Topics discussed will include how to report an invention to the laboratory's Office of Resources and Technology Assessment, and how to go about patenting the invention and commercializing it, e.g., through venture capital.
The seminars will feature presentations by Luiz Ortiz, a patent counsel from
Ortiz and Lopez -- a law firm that has an on-going relationship with Fermilab --
and by Jerry Zeilinski, and Christy Snider from Western Suburban Technology Enterprise Center.
The first session will be in Curia II from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. with a repeat in
One West from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
On Tuesday morning Ortiz will be available to meet with individual scientists
who want to know more.

National Weather Service Representative Meets with Roads & Grounds Department at Fermilab

Fermilab's Roads & Grounds Department works closely with the
National Weather Service when planning prairie burns in the fall and spring. (Click on image for larger version.) |

On October 7, Casey Sullivan of the National Weather Service visited Fermilab
to meet with the Roads & Grounds Department. Almost every fall and spring,
Fermilab's Roads & Grounds Department conducts controlled prairie burns
to keep the native plants healthy by clearing out the invasive non-native
plants. Before conducting a burn, the Roads & Grounds Department depends on the
National Weather Service for forecasts.
"The wind direction is really important for prescribed burns," said Sullivan, who

is the Fire Weather Program Leader for the National Weather Service in Romeoville,
Illinois.
Sullivan planned his visit to Fermilab, hoping to learn more about the lab and Roads & Grounds needs from the National Weather Service. With 120 offices across the country, the Romeoville location consists of ten forecasters and covers 23 counties in the Illinois and Indiana area. "It is actually an average size for a county warning area, but it is one of the most populated areas," Sullivan said. "We want people to know that we are here to benefit them and help with forecasts 24 hours a day 7 days a week."

Why was my computer
blocked from the network?

Boehnlein with DZero Computer Cluster at FCC (Click on image for larger version.) |
|
Recently, many people have received an email notifying them that their computers were blocked from the network because of a critical vulnerability called "Open X Server."
A critical vulnerability represents the highest software threat level, which
has either been exploited already or is likely to be exploited soon.
A vulnerability is declared to all registered system administrators by email
and posted on the computer security web page.
In general terms, this vulnerability allows anyone on the network, anywhere in the world, to monitor your screen and keyboard activity, including your username and password when you type them. The Fermilab computer security team is able to view the screens of users at Fermilab whose machines are vulnerable to this exploit; if the good guys can do it, so can the bad guys.

Women in Science and Engineering and TV Drama
A one-day seminar to be held on Monday 22 November 2004
The need to develop new strategies to attract more women into science, engineering and technology (SET) is widely recognised. TV drama offers one of the most powerful opportunities to present role models to inspire all ages, particularly the young, who often have poorly formed images of what being a scientist or engineer means.
