Employees Earn Degrees With Fermilab's Help | ||

Since Fermilab was founded about 35 years ago, more than 100 Fermilab employees have earned degrees
with the help of the laboratory's
Tuition Assistance
program.
"The Tuition Assistance program shows the lab's commitment to on-going learning
and employee development," said Training and Development Manager Barbara Brooks.
For those who want to further their education through evening or long-distance classes, Fermilab will pay the tuition toward degrees that benefit both the employee and the laboratory. Past graduates have earned associate, undergraduate and graduate degrees, in roughly equal numbers. Nine people have graduated in the past year year alone: Tony Busch of AD-ES& H (B.S. in Network Communications); Chris Carlson of FESS (Master's in Industrial Management); Sam Jarocki of AD (B.S. in Computer Science); Denise Keiner of Directorate (M.B.A.); William Kellogg of AD (B.S. in Computer Science); Jamieson Olsen of PPD (Master's in Electrical Engineering); Tom Prosapio of FESS (B.S. in Technical Management); Andre Rader of CD (B.A. in Computer Science); and Angela Wan of BSS (Master's in Accounting). To qualify for the program, employees must have been at Fermilab for at least six consecutive months. Part-time employees who work at least 20 hours per week do qualify. | ||

From the Chicago Tribune, October 31, 2004 Atom tour is smashing Public gets rare glimpse at scientific doings in Fermilab BATAVIA -- A family outing can mean different things to different families. A trip to the zoo for some; a theater trip or baseball game for others. But eight Brand family members from New Lenox and Elk Grove Village spent a few hours last week learning about stochastic cooling, the purpose of a Tevatron and the number of protons needed to produce an antiproton (100 billion).
Like the 100 or so others who enjoyed a rare public tour of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Batavia, David and Lynnea Brand said they couldn't tell a proton from an antiproton. They were just eager to get an opportunity to visit the facility, run by the U.S. Department of Energy.

Whittaker Excavating Earns Safety Award for MI-31 Construction Project On September 9, Associate Director Jed Brown presented Jason Whittaker of Whittaker Excavating with a certificate of appreciation for safely completing the MI-31 construction project on the Main Injector Ring without a single injury. "We put a premium on safety at Fermilab," said Brown at the award ceremony. "We want to pass our appreciation along to you. This project came in under budget, on time and without an injury. Congratulations."
Whittaker Excavating completed the MI-31 building in May 2004 after 14 months
of construction and 20,000 man-hours. The building consists of
approximately 2-foot-thick, 40-foot-tall, concrete walls that Whitaker Excavating
poured one at a time. Because the building is approximately 30 feet below
ground, Whittaker also completely excavated the area at MI-31. The newly
constructed building is the home to the Electron Cooling experiment. After
approximately six years of R&D work at the end of the proton beamline,
e-cooling started to move into its new location earlier this summer.
If successful, e-cooling will be one of several ingredients to increase
luminosity in the Tevatron.
