Rocky Kolb to Direct New Fermilab Particle Astrophysics Center
Michael S. Witherell, Director of Fermilab, today announced the establishment of the Fermilab Particle Astrophysics Center, and named the renowned

Fermilab and University of Chicago cosmologist Edward "Rocky" Kolb as its director.

"Astrophysics efforts began at our lab with the very successful Theoretical Astrophysics Group, and Rocky Kolb was a big part of establishing that tradition here," Witherell said. "Rocky is well known and well respected in the larger world of astrophysics outside Fermilab, so he was the obvious choice to get things started with the Center for Particle Astrophysics."

The Center will function as an intellectual focus for particle astrophysics efforts at the world's highest-energy particle physics lab, bringing together the Theoretical and Experimental Astrophysics Groups. It will also encompass existing projects, including the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and the Pierre Auger Cosmic Ray Observatory, as well as proposed projects, including the SuperNova Acceleration Probe to study dark energy as part of the Joint Dark Energy Mission.

About 30 historic vehicles taking a drive around the Tevatron as part of their tour of Fermilab. (Click on image for larger version.)
On Sunday, October 17, members of the Midwest Chapter of the Ford Model-T International Club took a tour of Fermilab in their historic vehicles. Hosted by the Office of Public Affairs, about 30 vehicles took a 14-mile drive around the site. Sandor Feher and Kurt Riesselmann gave tours of the 15th floor and the magnet facility at the Technical Division. Reidar Hahn took photos as the vehicles drove around the service roads of the Tevatron and the Main Injector.

Accident Shuts Down SLAC, Spurs Probe of Safety Rules
Adrian Cho
Officials at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) have shut down the laboratory's particle accelerators indefinitely after an accident that left one worker seriously injured. The accident has triggered an investigation by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) into electrical safety at the facility in Menlo Park, California. Repercussions from the accident are being felt by DOE's nine other science laboratories.

Safety Tip
Safety Belts
Being thrown from a moving vehicle is the number one cause of death in car crashes. Staying inside the vehicle is your best chance of survival.
Safety Belts
The PNNL vehicle had
a cab installed but was
missing safety belts and
hip restraints.
Use safety belts; they are designed to keep you there.

But what about vehicles that are not intended for over the road use? On 10/08/2004 an employee at Pacific Northwest National Lab (PNNL) fell from an open-configuration utility vehicle as it rounded the corner of a cooling pond. The individual sustained a right leg fracture that required surgery, hospitalization, and a lengthy recovery. It was determined that the original equipment safety restraints (safety belts and hip restraints) were not installed by the distributor following installation of an optional cab.

Actually, safety belts are a good solution whenever staying in your vehicle is preferable to being tossed out. With cars and trucks, wearing them in the front seat improves your chances of survival by a factor of two. Although statistics are not readily available, it is clear that safety belts are also advisable in many industrial and construction vehicles.

DOE requires the use of seat belts by each employee operating or riding in a Government vehicle (41 CFR 109-6.400-50(g)). This rule is enforced for anyone riding in one of our Fermilab taxis. The Illinois Rules of the Road also require safety belts for everyone in a front seat, even if the vehicle is equipped with air bags. Children up to the age of 16 must be in a safety seat or safety belt, regardless of location in the vehicle. Additional requirements apply if the driver is less than 18 years.

Have a great day and let's work safely all week!
