Fermilab Wins Niobium Cup Golf Competition | ||

In late September, after a review at Cornell University in Ithaca, NY
Fermilab's Tom Peterson and JLab's Ed Daly were discussing their respective
lab's golf leagues and decided to have an inter-lab golf competition --
a Ryder Cup-style competition. Peterson and Daly decided
the competition would be match play, in which one determines the winner
by the most holes won, rather than least total strokes. In honor of the
superconducting niobium RF
cavities used at JLab and proposed for Fermilab's Proton Driver and the
International Linear Collider, Peterson suggested the name Niobium Cup.
"Of course, bringing players of the two leagues together would have been impractical, so we took advantage of the groundwork laid down by theoretical golfers over the years," said Peterson. "We agreed to compare scores via our season handicaps following play on our own home courses." On Monday evening, October 4, a group from the Jefferson Lab golf league played their course. And on Tuesday evening, October 5, a group of eight from Fermilab's Bliss Creek Golf League played at Bliss Creek.
Depending on how closely you analyze the data, Fermilab won either five or
six of the eight matches.
"No matter how we calculate handicaps, Fermilab won the Niobium Cup,"
Peterson said.
"Although the Fermilab golf league members were well into their
off-season training regimen, they rose to the challenge and met
the awesome pressure with a tremendous performance.
We enjoyed this competition with our colleagues at Jefferson Lab and
hope for a rematch next year."
