Witherell Among Recipients of DOE Secretary's Gold Award
Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham
Secretary of Energy

Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham presented the Secretary's Gold Award to eight current and former directors of Department of Energy national laboratories in Washington, D.C. on Monday, including Fermilab Director Michael Witherell. The award is the Energy Department's highest honorary award and includes a plaque with citation, a medallion and a rosette.

"I'm proud to recognize the people whose hard work and dedication contribute so much to the Department of Energy's vital missions," said Secretary Abraham, who presented the awards at a luncheon at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, D.C. "Our world-class laboratories are a marvelous resource and have made far-reaching contributions-not only to the Department of Energy, but to our Nation and indeed the world."

Meet the New Student Representatives
The new GSA representatives - From left to right: Katsanos, Copic, Clark, Pursley and Sengupta (click on image to enlarge)
No negative campaigning was involved for the election of the new Graduate Student Association (GSA) representatives: David Clark (CDF) from Brandeis University, Katherine Copic (CDF) from the University of Michigan, Yannis Katsanos (DZero) from Columbia University, Jennifer Pursley (CDF) from John Hopkins University and Sinjini Sengupta (Dzero) from Florida State University.

At the top of the agenda for this year, the new officers said, will be the update of the GSA's Guide to Life, a useful resource for users and employees as well as students. Other major tasks will be to organize next spring's "New Perspectives" conference and to take part in a trip to Washington, D.C. together with the Users Executive Committee and the SLAC Users Organization.

But right now, the GSA's most immediate concern is throwing this weekend's Halloween party. "It will be an opportunity to see how we work together as a group," said Katsanos.

The representatives said all graduate students are always welcome to contact them -- either by email or in person -- about any issues students may face during their stay at Fermilab.

Director's Corner
Good Morning!
Mike Witherell
Mike Witherell
I was pleased to receive the Secretary of Energy's Gold Award yesterday, along with seven other current and former directors of DOE national laboratories. The accomplishments at Fermilab that the Secretary cited included excellent accelerator performance, successful execution of projects, and an outstanding safety record.

These are the accomplishments of the entire Laboratory and I would like to express my appreciation to all of you. Fermilab continues to produce great science because of your contributions. It is an honor to work with such a dedicated group of people.

What Makes an Equation Beautiful
By Kenneth Chang
Consider a verbal description of the effect of gravity: drop a ball, and it will fall.

That is a true enough fact, but fuzzy in the way that frustrates scientists. How fast does the ball fall? Does it fall at constant rate, or accelerate? Would a heavier ball fall faster? More words, more sentences could provide details, swelling into an unwieldy yet still incomplete paragraph.
