VMS Installs More Posters on 15th Floor | ||

On September 24, members of the Visual Media Services department installed a
third set of posters on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall. Titled "From Quarks
to the Cosmos" the eight posters highlight the search for the Higgs as well
as the goals of three Fermilab astrophysics projects - Auger, CDMS and SDSS.
The posters also include the most basic questions about the universe facing
physicists in the 21st century, as recently stated in the Quantum Universe
report.
The posters feature large-size images with short captions, serving as visual aids and talking points for docents and employees giving tours of the lab. With input from the Office of Public Affairs, Reidar Hahn and Diana Canzone designed and printed all posters in house. Previously, VMS produced and installed the two sets "Fermilab Accelerators" and "Collider Experiments." Next in line are "Neutrino Experiments" and "Technology." | ||

A Good LInC to Click On | ||

For the past 10 years, Laura Mengel of the Computing Division has promoted
the use of technology to help teachers give their students a more active role
in learning.
The Leadership Institute Integrating Internet, Instruction and Curriculum (LInC), the Fermilab educational program she founded and leads, earned kudos on Sept. 10 as Resource of the Day from the Eisenhower National Clearinghouse, a Web portal for math and science teachers supported by the U.S. Department of Education. "This is really a nice recognition for Laura and all the teachers who worked with her. They have put a lot of work into the program over the past 10 years," said Marge Bardeen, the head of Fermilab's Education Office. LInC trains teachers both on-line and on-site. Teachers learn how to create or customize on-line educational materials and integrate them in the curriculum. But they also learn to interact with their students in a new way. "We help teachers make the transition from the lecture mode to inquiry-based learning," Mengel said. Students learn better if they find things out for themselves -- the way a scientist does research, Mengel said. With the Web, the teacher is no longer the students' only source of information. The Web also enables students to collaborate across geographical divides, and eventually to publish their results. "With technology, you can open up the classroom walls," she said.
In a typical project, students from schools in Maryland and D.C. tested the waters
of the Chesapeake Bay Watershed for pollutants and compared their results with
kids who lived far up- or downstream. The program also trains teachers so they can offer LInC classes to their peers
around the country. Over 500 educators from 28 states have participated in
different LInC programs.

Smoke Detectors Fire Prevention Week is October 3 through October 9 this year. The National Fire Protection Association selected "Test Your Smoke Alarms" as this year's theme. At home, fire protection is your responsibility. Roughly 70 percent of home fire deaths result from fires with no smoke alarms or no functioning smoke alarms. So what is the best way to deploy smoke alarms? They should be installed on every level of your home, including the basement, and outside every sleeping area. They should be mounted high on walls or ceilings and tested once a month in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Batteries should be replaced once a year, whenever the alarm "chirps" warning that the battery is low. Fire alarms do not last forever; you should plan on replacing them every 10 years. Like at work, you should also develop a fire evacuation plan. Everyone in your household should understand this plan and you should walk through the steps to be sure it is actually usable. Establish an outside meeting place where everyone can meet after they've escaped. For additional information, read the NFPA's fact sheet on smoke detectors.
