Quantum Universe Web Site Launched

Washington, D.C.-- Members of the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel to the
Department of Energy and the National Science Foundation, meeting in Washington,
D.C. today (September 24), announced the launch of the Quantum Universe Web site.
Along with HEPAP's recently published Quantum Universe report, the new site
describes the quest to explain the universe in terms of quantum physics, which
governs the behavior of the microscopic, subatomic world.
In response to a charge from DOE's Office of Science and NSF to provide "a
clear picture of the connected, complementary experimental approaches to the
truly exciting scientific questions of our time," the Web site presents nine
fundamental questions about the universe. Answering them, say the Web site and
the report, will lead to "a revolution in particle physics and a quantum leap
in our understanding of the mystery and beauty of the universe."

Senate Appropriations Committee Marks Up NSF
Yesterday, the full Senate Appropriations Committee marked up and reported
out their version of an FY 2005 VA, HUD, and Independent Agencies Appropriations
Act. This legislation contains funding for both the National Science Foundation
and NASA. This summary will focus on NSF to be followed up later today with a summary on the Senate’s recommendations for NASA.
For NSF, the Senate Appropriations Committee is recommending a total budget of $5.74 billion – a 3% increase over the FY 2004 level. The Senate’s recommendation is equal to the President’s request and counters the House recommendation which had sought to cut the NSF request by almost $300 million to a level of $5.47 billion.

From the Chicago Sun-Times, September 22, 2004
Panel will try to win billion-dollar project
by Howard Wolinsky
Gov. Blagojevich on Tuesday announced he had named a high-level task force of government, business, labor and research university leaders to bring a $1 billion new project to Argonne National Laboratory that could add hundreds of permanent jobs and thousands of construction jobs.
Illinois and Michigan are competing for the Rare Isotope Accelerator project that will study fundamental science but is expected to yield commercial applications in medicine, energy production and national security.
"It is critical that the public and private sectors in Illinois work together to support Argonne as the location for this important new facility," Blagojevich said.
He asked Jack Lavin, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, to lead a public-private task force with Argonne director Hermann Grunder and University of Chicago President Don Randel.

Today's Wine & Cheese talk, at 4 p.m. in One West, offers a direct line on
Fermilab's future.
Shekhar Mishra, Head of Fermilab Efforts for the International Linear Collider,
and Steve Holmes, Associate Director for Accelerators, will offer presentations
on "Linear Collider R&D: Fermilab Plans."
"Fermilab is very serious about bidding to host the ILC," said Mishra. "There is

already a lot of activity going on at the lab in linear collider R&D, and there
is much more to come."
In his Colloquium presentation last week, Fermilab Director Michael Witherell
asserted that the lab could effectively double ILC resources for FY05, by
redirecting X-band (warm) efforts and focusing on superconducting RF in light
of the recommendation by the ILC International Technology
Recommendation Panel.
Holmes, who is a member of the ILC-America Steering Committee, will discuss
international developments and the technical

requirements facing ILC R&D as a
result of the recent decision to proceed with superconducting RF technology.
Mishra will discuss Fermilab's plans for expanding work already underway, including
superconducting radiofrequency accelerator cavities, the ILC physics and detector
study group, silicon-based detector design studies, and the Meson Test Beam
Facility, one of the few such facilities available in particle physics.

Sing Happy Birthday to CERN Today!
Next month CERN will celebrate its 50th birthday.
Fermilab and other particle physics labs
are preparing a video birthday card that will be sent to CERN.
Join us today at
11:30 a.m. on the front steps of Wilson Hall to sing Happy Birthday
to CERN. For more information, contact Elizabeth Clements.
Join Fermilab's Habitat Restoration Group Tomorrow
The Habitat Restoration group will meet tomorrow, September 25, at 8:00 a.m.
in the Lederman Science Center parking lot.
Coffee and doughnuts will be served.
From there the group will drive to the area between Roads A-1
and A-2 to cut down non-native bushes and weeds.
Please wear long sleeves and long pants.
For more information call Barb Kristen 840-3199. In the case
of inclement weather please call the Fermilab operator for cancellation.
