Year-long TeV4LHC Workshop Began with Fermilab Meeting | ||

Last week Fermilab hosted the first round of the TeV4LHC workshops, dedicated
to making the experience from today's highest-energy
accelerator benefit the next-generation experiments at CERN's LHC.
The Tevatron's current know-how, and specially designed observations over the next few years, can help LHC physicists learn how to sift through terabytes of "background" to find the elusive signs of new physics when the LHC begins operating, said Tev4LHC organizer Marcela Carena, a Fermilab theoretical physicist. "Real data analysis has always been more difficult than the simulations. We expect that the same is going to happen at [the two LHC detectors] ATLAS and CMS," said workshop organizer Stephen Mrenna, also a Fermilab theorist. Tevatron experimenters such as Regina Demina of the University of Rochester shared knowledge they earned the hard way. "[Supersymmetry] will not jump at you after one week," Demina said in her talk Thursday morning, referring to one of the most coveted discoveries the LHC hopes to make. Many in the audience, such as CERN's Albert De Roeck, appreciated recommendations such as Demina's on carefully separating the detector commissioning phase from the science. "It's a very open discussion," De Roeck said, "and this is the time to be open." The workshop's intended audience included physicists at U.S. institutions who will take part in the LHC experiments through the LHC Computing Grid. "We're hoping to show the world that this is a viable alternative to traveling," Mrenna said.
The three-day workshop, which attracted more than 200 participants, will be
followed up by meetings at Brookhaven National Laboratory in February,
at CERN in April, and again at Fermilab next fall.

Press Release: Lawrence Berkeley Lab, September 19, 2004 Moore Foundation Awards $2.38 Million for Supernova Research BERKELEY, CA – The Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation of San Francisco has awarded $2,377,000 to the University of California at Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory, in support of the Nearby Supernova Factory (SNfactory). The grant is intended to further dark energy research through the study and understanding of nearby Type Ia supernovae, a special class of very bright exploding stars.
The grant is one of five the Moore Foundation has recently made to the University of California system in astronomy and astrophysics, including grants for the creation of a 30-meter telescope (with Caltech) and to the Mount Wilson Observatory, and grants for studies of stellar atmospheres and adaptive optics. The SNfactory grant, made through UC Berkeley's Space Sciences Laboratory, is directed to the "development of tools critical for greater understanding of Type Ia supernovae as indicators of dark energy."

New Head of EPP On July 1, David Christian became the new head of the Experimental Physics Projects Department. Christian, who has served as deputy head of EPP for the

Christian, a 24-year Fermilab employee, has collaborated on several experiments at the laboratory and worked in management positions in several departments. He now looks forward to working with small and developing projects at Fermilab.
"I'm still getting acclimated," said Christian. "In the short term, I'm looking forward to figuring out the goals of the department, and how it can best serve its purpose in the laboratory. EPP provides support for small projects and for ideas which haven't yet proven themselves; a very small amount of support can make the difference between an idea developing or dying."
