Fermilab Director Seeks Nominations for Annual Award for Education Volunteers | ||

The many successes of Fermilab's kindergarten through 12th grade educational
programs depend on the talents of over 200 volunteers who help out each year.
Whether it is simply meeting with students and teachers to explain what Fermilab
is all
about or designing, building and maintaining Lederman Science exhibits,
the K-12 students and teachers in these programs benefit
both directly and indirectly from the volunteers.
Director Michael Witherell has announced an annual award of $1000, made possible by an anonymous donor, to recognize some of the volunteers whose contributions go beyond the usual level of support. The award recipient will be recognized at the annual fall Volunteers' Reception which will be at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 4 on the second floor crossover.
Awardees will be selected from nominations. To submit a nomination, download
a nomination form or pick up a
form from Jackie Coleman, WH2E.
Forms must be received by Friday, October 8 to be considered for the 2004 award.

or jackie@fnal.gov.
Nominees must be a Fermilab staff member, user or contractor. Nominations will
be held for two consecutive years.

In yesterday's issue, Fermilab Today incorrectly stated that the
Beam Position Monitor upgrade in the Tevatron is 100% complete. The BPM
upgrade in the tunnel is complete, but the software,
electronic hardware, installation, and commissioning efforts required for
the system upgrade are not complete. Fermilab Today regrets the error.

From the Rockford Register Star, September 13, 2004 No optical illusion: Fiber good for Rockford If Rockford wants more jobs and better paying jobs, it must be in the loop. The best way to get there is through city ownership of a fiber-optic network.
Mayor Doug Scott last week announced the city's plans to buy a 22-mile ring of fiber-optic cables beneath Rockford. The cables, which have been dormant for most of the last decade, are actually bundles of glass fiber-optic tubes. Each tube is no more than the width of a hair but can move information 10,000 times faster than copper wire.

Twenty years ago Fermilab benefited from the experience at the CERN SppS in starting up the Tevatron collider program. Accelerator and experimental lessons learned there were used to inform the newer program here. Many new ideas were added here, of course, most notably the superconducting magnets that extended the energy reach well beyond that of the CERN collider.
The LHC accelerator and detectors are in many ways very advanced compared to what was possible to build twenty years ago, and they will have to operate in a much more challenging environment. But many lessons learned with hard experience at the Tevatron will make it possible for the LHC program to get a fast start. Everything we do in our field builds on the accomplishments of the past.
