What's Up with the Linear Collider?
The fourteenth in a series of Fermilab Today stories on the International
Linear Collider. The entire series is available online.
Focus Shifts to Central Management Team
|
|
ILCSC chairman Maury Tigner of Cornell University |
|
Following the endorsement of superconducting technology for the proposed
International Linear Collider
(Fermilab Today, August 20, 2004),
the international LC community will move toward advancing the Global Design
Initiative by forming the Central Management Team.
The two lead organizations, the International Committee for Future Accelerators
(ICFA) and the International Linear Collider Steering Committee (ILCSC), have begun
the process by establishing a Director Search Committee and a Site Evaluation
Committee for the Central Management Team. ILCSC chairman Maury Tigner, of Cornell
University, said the committees would like to have recommendations for ICFA at
the next American regional meeting in February, 2005 in Vancouver, Canada.
The Director would then work with regional managers from the American, European and
Asian steering committees to select the remaining members of the Central Management
Team. Tigner said there have been nine offers to host the central team (including
Fermilab).
"We need to establish a means of comparison to evaluate the offers, and consider
other conditions to select a site," he said.
The central team would be charged with formulating a Conceptual Design Report,
the first phase of the GDI. Tigner also emphasized another aspect of furthering
ILC goals: moving from what he called the current "grass roots" efforts into more
direct connection with international funding agencies.
"This is not yet a formal project," he said. "For example, Congress has not
allocated funds. It's very important that we establish firmer connections with
the funding agencies. We're anxious to cooperate with these agencies."
Representatives of scientific funding agencies from Europe, Japan and North
America, including the U.S. Department of Energy, have met three times as a
self-described "informal body" to discuss prospects for an ILC.
They have another meeting scheduled next week
in Geneva, Switzerland

The Fine Line Creative Arts Center in St. Charles will kick off its 25th
anniversary year celebration with a faculty exhibition in the art gallery
at Fermilab. The exhibit, which runs from September 1 through October 31, 2004,
will include work by 27 artists and feature work in a variety of media including
fibers, jewelry, ceramics, painting and printmaking.
The opening celebration will be held on Friday, September 10, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
in the second floor art gallery of Wilson Hall at Fermilab. All employees and users
are invited to attend the reception. For more information, contact

Attention IMAPServer3 Users
Downtime Scheduled for IMAPServer3 on September 11 and September 12
|
|
Feynman Computing Center |
|
IMAPServer3 will be upgraded on September 11 and September 12. This will
consist of system changes as well as an upgrade to the IMAP software.
The upgrade will take approximately 24 hours, due to extra precautions
taken to avoid problems uncovered during the IMAPserver1 upgrade. The
work will start at noon on September 11, and it should be completed
by noon on September 12.
IMAPServer3 users should double check their email settings and make sure
they are connecting
to imapserver3.fnal.gov, and not imapserverc.fnal.gov. After the upgrade
imapserverc.fnal.gov will no longer be the same machine.
The upgrades will provide a number of benefits, including improved
IMAPServer performance, improved Webmail with an address book, and
Server side filters, which will allow the server to folder your mail
rather than the client. All users will also get a new folder called
"Tagged Spam" which will by default have all mail tagged by the spam
filters moved to it.
Documentation on the new server side filtering is available online.

U.S. Scientific Computing Enters New Era with Grid3
US-LHC experiments use grid computing to meet “data challenge”
Cambridge, Mass.—Scientists of the Open Science Grid Consortium, meeting at a
workshop at Harvard University, today (September 9), announced the success of a
nine-month trial operation of a U.S. data grid for particle physics experiments
and other scientific applications. The prototype grid, called Grid3, uses the
Internet to combine the computational resources of 26 universities and national
laboratories across the U.S. to serve the computing needs of more than 10 research
groups in particle physics, astrophysics, bioinformatics and computer science.

Boehlert Calls on DOE to Implement GAO Recommendations to Strengthen
Controls Over Purchase Card Program
WASHINGTON, D.C., September 8, 2004 – Science Committee Chairman Sherwood Boehlert (R-NY) called on the Department of Energy (DOE) and its contractors to tighten procurement controls at its national laboratories by implementing recommendations called for in four Government Accountability Office (GAO) reports that are being released today.
In the four reports, GAO identified several instances of non-compliance with procurement regulations governing the use of purchase cards at four DOE national laboratories: Lawrence Livermore, Sandia, Lawrence Berkeley, and Pacific Northwest. Problems included splitting purchases into two transactions to avoid price limits, and instances where purchasers were allowed to approve their own transactions. The purchase cards, which are similar to credit cards, are intended to reduce the bureaucratic cost and paperwork of routine purchases.

During the shutdown, Fermilab Today will offer a series on the history and
operation of the laboratory's accelerator complex. The Cockcroft-Walton
pre-accelerator leads off the series.
The Cockcroft-Walton
Fermilab has the most powerful accelerator in the world. This process of particle acceleration begins with a small bottle of hydrogen located in the electrostatic Preaccelerator, which is where everything starts. Fermilab's Preaccelerator is based on the Cockcroft-Walton design. It produces H- ions (hydrogen consists of a proton and an electron. The H- ion has an extra electron added) with an energy level of 750 keV (1 eV = one electron volt). The H- ions travel through the Linac and enter the Booster where both electrons are stripped off leaving a proton.
