Fermilab Health Fair Tomorrow | ||

Fermilab's 8th semi-annual health fair will focus on personal wellness and health screenings in the Wilson Hall Atrium on Thursday, September 9, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Yoga, massage, and biofeedback presentations will be offered, and raffle tickets for various prizes will also be available. "We want our employees to be aware of the resources and organizations in the area and how these resources can be accessed, and to enjoy the fair as well," said Employee Assistance Counselor Bernie Dugan, who is one of the fair organizers. Health and community organization representatives will be available to answer questions and conduct various screenings for blood pressure, heart rate, and eye exams, plus a computerized back and posture test. Suzanne Osman, who has led past Wellness Works Presentations, will teach participants about the therapeutic benefits of music through the art of hand drumming, with a demonstration in One North. CDF September 11, CDF will have no power from 7:30 AM to about 5:30 PM. However, this is for oil switch maintenance. If the technicians find problems, the power outage may last longer. Industrial Building September 11, no power for 24 hours beginning at 7:30 AM Feynman Computing Center September 11, the Feynman Computing Center will switch to its generators before its 24-hour power outage begins at 7:30 AM. There will be no power interruption. From New Scientist, September 4, 2004: Half the universe is missing Today's universe is only half the place it used to be. Admittedly there is still a lot of it around, locked up in dust and gas, but that's only half the story - quite literally. Over 13 billion years ago, the big bang forged equal amounts of matter and antimatter. Take a look around today though, and you'll see that all the antimatter has vanished.
It's lucky for us that it has. According to our best theories, all the matter and antimatter should have annihilated each other in a puff of radiation. The universe should be filled with pure light, not planets and stars and people. To create the universe we see today, matter somehow gained the upper hand over antimatter a fraction of a second after the big bang. But how?

Russians at Fermilab share
grief over school siege Like all Russians, Vladimir Shiltsev kept special memories of the traditions when school opened each year on September 1. "The first day of school is very important, like a national holiday. We all went through that day," said Shiltsev, head of the Accelerator Division's Tevatron Department. "All students are together from the first grade through the 10th grade, so schools are very large. All the parents are there on the first day. All the students form one line, and the rector and all the teachers come to greet all the children.
It was amid this ceremonial day in Russia's southern city of Beslan that the hostage tragedy took place on Sept. 1, with an estimated 350 deaths. Russians comprise the second-largest foreign national group at Fermilab (Italians are the largest group), with more than 180 users, students and guest scientists, plus many full-time employees like Shiltsev and their families. The Beslan tragedy has hit them hard, especially following the crash of two planes and an explosion in Moscow in the last few weeks. "But those two do not compare," Shiltsev said. "Not when this happens to kids, hostages." Shiltsev said many members of the lab's Russian community have made donations through Moscow Help, a not-for-profit organization set up originally to aid victims of the Moscow theater bombing in October, 2002. "They don't go through the government," he said. "The people-to-people organizations are more effective. We will do what we can." |
