Farewell, Mary Cullen
Mary Cullen retires today after 20 years at Fermilab. An administrative specialist, she has worked for the laboratory's last three directors through many notable events in Fermilab history.
"Leon Lederman interviewed me," said Cullen. "His office was unbelievable -- piles

of stuff everywhere. At the end of the interview, he looked at me and asked
'How do you feel about organizing this?' 'Piece of cake,' I said."
After five years with Lederman, Cullen spent the next decade as assistant to John Peoples, and the last five years with current director Mike Witherell.
"Mary was extraordinary," said Peoples. "She came in every Saturday for almost one year when I was director of the SSC shutdown, director of Fermilab and chairman of ICFA. She made sure that I was always in the right place, and that I always had a bed to sleep in."
"Mary has been at the center of laboratory events for the last 20 years, from the discovery of the top quark to the choice of technology for the linear collider," said Witherell. "During this time she has responded with energy and efficiency to the many emergencies that have arisen on the second floor. Through it all, her commitment to Fermilab has been strong. I want to thank her for her outstanding contribution to the life and work of the lab."
Cullen's work at Fermilab has taken her to Colorado, Washington, D.C. and Russia. She looks forward to more travel in retirement, and also to becoming a volunteer child advocate.
"I've absolutely loved working at Fermilab," said Cullen. "I love the diversity of people and work, and I'll miss the excitement and challenge of the job. I'll also miss my co-workers very much. I've been so fortunate-it's never been a task to come to work."

Watch Out for Wasps
|

Wasps outside of Wilson Hall (Click on image for larger version.) |
|
It's that time of year again -- wasps are making their presence known around the lab.
Watch for them and their nests all around the Fermilab site as well as around
your home. Employees who congregate in the plaza in front of Wilson Hall should
be especially careful, as wasps have already been sighted near the cross-pieces
above the front doors. (We're not kidding. The photographer who took the above
photo had an extremely close encounter with a very large wasp and ran
back into Wilson Hall for safety.)
"There's a very large population of wasps in our area this year," said David
Nevin from FESS. "People should be careful all around the lab, especially
anywhere there's an open end of pipe, or small nooks and crannies where wasps
like to build their nests."
If you should come into contact with a wasp, be patient. Don't swat at or crush
the insect, as a chemical can be released that signals others to attack. If
the wasp lands on you, try to wait until it satisfies its curiosity. If you
must, very gently brush it off with a piece of paper, using slow, deliberate
movements.

How Many Physicists Does it Take to Wash the Windows?
|
|
|
A crowd gathered in the atrium of Wilson Hall yesterday
to watch a crane raise a lift off of a truck and place it in front of the building.
Workers then rolled the lift inside the atrium. The lift, which can reach as high as 80 feet, will be used to wash
the windows and trim the trees in the atrium. (Click on images for larger version.) |

The Grid Becomes a Reality
This week, UK particle physicists will demonstrate the world's largest, working computing Grid. With over 6,000 computers at 78 sites internationally, the Large Hadron Collider Computing Grid (LCG) is the first permanent, worldwide Grid for doing real science. The UK is a major part of LCG, providing more than 1,000 computers in 12 sites. At the 2004 UK e-Science All Hands Meeting in Nottingham, particle physicists representing a collaboration of 20 UK institutions will explain to biologists, chemists and computer scientists how they reached this milestone.

What's Up with the Linear Collider?
The thirteenth in a series of Fermilab Today stories on the
International Linear Collider. The entire series is available online.
A Site for the ILC
With the selection of superconducting or "cold" technology for the proposed
International Linear Collider, the next steps for the ILC Steering
Committee involve the appointment of a Project Manager and inauguration
of the Global Design Initiative, to begin formulating a Conceptual Design
Report. But a site for the proposed global machine is not part of the official
discussion yet, and won't be for several years.
|
Mike Witherell |
"We must take several steps on the ILC before deciding its site.," said
Fermilab Director Michael Witherell, a member of the U.S. Linear Collider
Steering Committee.
"Fermilab wants to be considered as the host site for this exciting new machine,"
Witherell continued. "We believe that there are several unique advantages of a
nearby site. We want to be ready when the time comes, so we will assemble the
information needed for an informed decision."
Fermilab has begun working with geologists at Northern Illinois University in
DeKalb in their ongoing investigations of
conditions below the surface in the northern region of the state. Geologists
regard this region as seismically stable, an important criterion for any
possible ILC site.
Northern Illinois also offers the advantages of a strong scientific
base at Fermilab and nearby Argonne National Laboratory, and at five major research
universities. In addition, the region has the existing utilities
and transportation infrastructure to support ILC construction and operations.
Fermilab, as the flagship laboratory of U.S. particle physics, offers accelerator
and detector expertise as well as extensive experience in construction, and
operation of large accelerator-based projects and collaboration with other
universities and laboratories around the world.

Fermilab's International Folk Dancers and the
Scottish Country Dancers will perform and teach dance workshops
at the Fox Valley Folk Festival on September 5 and 6 on Island Park in Geneva.
The Fermilab International Folk Dancers will be on the main stage
at 2:00 p.m. on September 5, accompanied by Spatter
Dash, a band from South Bend, Indiana. Mady Newfield will lead a teaching workshop
to live music at 5:00 p.m. on September 5 in area 3. There will be another
International Folk Dancing workshop at noon on September 6.
The Silk and Thistle Scottish Country Dancers will also perform during their
workshop at 4:00 p.m. in area 3 on September 5. Fermilab's Doug Jensen will
teach the workshop, which will include music by Jeremy Kittel and John Behling.
