Open Enrollment for Medical and Dental Insurance Plans Begins September 7
New Medical Insurance Plan Available
Wilson Hall
The open enrollment period for Fermilab's medical and dental insurance plans will begin on Tuesday, September 7 at 8:00 a.m. and will end on Monday, September 20 at 5:00 p.m. During the open enrollment period, employees can transfer medical and dental coverage, enroll in a plan or add eligible dependents to a plan. Fermilab's Benefits Office also offers a new HMO Blue Advantage plan this year, which features lower monthly insurance premium rates and lower prescription copays. Employees will receive a complete information packet about the new plan and the open enrollment period in their mailboxes soon. Plan representatives from Cigna and Blue Cross/Blue Shield will be available to answer any questions about the medical or dental plans in the Wilson Hall Atrum on September 7 from noon to 5:00 p.m. and September 8 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Enrollment forms are available to download online.

Fermilab Colloquium Today
Craig Hogan of the University of Washington will present "Quantum Gravity in the Microwave Sky" today at 4:00 p.m. in One West. As Vice Provost for Research, Hogan, who is also a Professor in the Astronomy and Physics departments, is the principal
Hogan
Craig Hogan
advocate of research activities at the University of Washington. His current research interests lie in the possibility of observing signs of quantum gravity in the cosmic background radiation, and the generation and detection of stochastic gravitational wave backgrounds from events in the early universe such as phase transitions and the formation of our 3-dimensional space. Hogan is a former member of the High-z Supernova Search Team and is currently a member of the LISA International Science Team. His primer on cosmology, "The Little Book of the Big Bang" , is now available in Dutch, Portuguese, German, Italian and Polish translations.

Downtime Scheduled for IMAPServer2
Feynman Computing Center
On September 4 and 5, IMAPServer2 will be upgraded. This will consist of system changes as well as an upgrade to the IMAP software. The upgrade will take several hours. The current estimate is 12-14 hours. The work will start at 10:00 p.m. on September 4, and it should be completed by noon on September 5.

The upgrades will provide a number of benefits, including improved IMAPServer availability, improved Webmail with an address book, and Server side filters, which will allow the server to folder your mail rather than the client.

Documentation will be available online shortly for the new features. If you have any questions or concerns please open up a ticket with the Computing Division Helpdesk.

Choices in The Quantum Universe
"It was a blast," said Persis Drell, director of research at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC), "the most fun committee I've ever been on."

This kind of enthusiasm is rare oftentimes: as the questions get bigger, the answers that a committee can contribute often become more narrow and legalistic. But that kind of binary choice, either between a fun or tedious task, hardly seemed worthy when considering the biggest questions, particularly when the questions concern quantum mechanics.
