Fermilab SIST Students Complete Internships

Thirteen Summer Internships in Science and Technology students wrapped up their internships at Fermilab last week with presentations ranging from the search for supernovas in Sloan Digital Sky Survey to improving ion production in the Tevatron.

"SIST gives academically talented minority students the opportunity to work along scientists and engineers," said Elliott McCrory, who directs the SIST program with Dianne Engram of the Equal Opportunity Office. Now finishing its 34th year, SIST is Fermilab's oldest educational program. It is open to all undergraduate minority students who have completed their first year of college and are majoring in physics, electrical-mechanical engineering, and computer science. SIST makes a concerted effort to recruit students from historically black colleges and universities.

"The program doesn't work unless they have meaningful jobs and enthusiastic supervisors," McCrory said. "We try to put them where they'll be valued, and I think the quality of their presentations shows they're able to accomplish a lot in their 12 weeks here."

SIST can also lead students into the GEM program, which pays the graduate school tuition of two engineering students each year, and the Fellowship for Minority Students Program, a stipend allowing Ph.D. students to forgo teaching in graduate school to focus solely on their thesis work.

"We're trying to help build a pipeline that brings exceptionally qualified minority students into academia and professional technical careers," Engram said. "Our internship also helps students to hone their writing and researching skills and can significantly increase their chances of getting into graduate school. I know it's working because I've received several letters of recommendation for incoming students from professors who also went through the program."

Mystical Arts of Tibet -- Sacred Music Sacred Dance for World Peace with the Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery

The Fermilab Arts Series presents "Mystical Arts of Tibet -- Sacred Music Sacred Dance for World Peace with the Monks of the Drepung Loseling Monastery" on Saturday, August 21 at 8:00 p.m. in Ramsey Auditorium. Approximately 200 tickets are still available for this performance.

Ancient societies conceived that the ritual performance of sacred music and dance at auspicious times establishes communication with the higher powers of good and brings about heeling on environmental, social, and personal levels. In Tibet, whenever a monastery celebrated a spiritual festival, people from the surrounding villages and nomadic tribes would assemble for three or four days of sacred music and dance. The Mystical Arts of Tibet tour is designed as a development of this tradition to promote world peace. The presentation has been streamlined in such a way as to maintain the essential integrity and purpose of parts of the celebration.

Since 1988-89, the monks have been touring their traditional monastic music and masked dances across North America, South America, Asia and Europe, visiting more than 100 cities. The artists are monks form the Drepung Loseling Monastery, which has been re-established in exile in south India. The performers are not full-time professionals, but genuine monks who are taking time off from their life-long devotion to participate in the tour.

This week physicists from the DZero and CDF collaborations are presenting new results during the 32nd International Conference on High Energy Physics in Beijing, China. Some of the physics news involves new information about the third generation quarks, the top and bottom quarks, both of which were discovered here at Fermilab. Other results include limits on exotic new physics such as supersymmetry and extra dimensions, and measurements of production rates for jets and weak bosons. These results and their theoretical interpretation were previewed at the Tevatron Connection here last week. The collaborations have taken advantage of the excellent performance of the accelerators over the last year to produce a large harvest of important new physics.

What can we expect from the Tevatron experiments next year? The data samples will be much larger than the ones being studied now, and the analysis algorithms will be better developed. The collaborations will also be installing selected improvements to the detectors that will make it possible for them to take full advantage of coming luminosity increases. As a result, new Run II physics will be featured at every particle physics conference for years to come.

Fermilab is Magnet for Suburban Legends
Fermilab Today, the daily newsletter of Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, several months ago asked its readers to send in urban legends they had heard about Fermilab during the more than 30 years the facility has been a neighbor to Batavia.

The newsletter received dozens of responses, the best of which it compiled on its Web site at the end of July.

Announcing the 4th Annual Writing Contest
Entries are welcome for Short Stories (between 500 to 5000 words), Short-short Stories (less than 500 words) and Poems (less than 50 lines). The winners will get cash prizes in form of Book Store Gift Cards. The entry form and rules of the contest are available online. Send your entries along with a signed form by October 4 to Dinker Charak (MS 369). The results will be announced by Oct 31. The winning entries will be published in 'Lumina,' the Writer's Club online magzine.

Bowlers Wanted for the 2004-2005 Bowling Season
The Fermilab Wednesday Night Bowling League is looking for a few new bowlers this year. This is a sanctioned mixed league with a combination of Fermilab and NICOR employees. The league bowls at the Bowling Green Sports Center in West Chicago on Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. The cost is $13.00 per week, and the season starts on September 8 and ends on March 30.
