TARGET Program Celebrates 25th Anniversary | ||

The TARGET program marked its 25th anniversary on Friday, August 6 as this
summer's students completed their six-week program with project presentations
ranging from Rocket Aerodynamics to Fiber Optics Transmission and Receiving.
Each summer, TARGET pairs about 20 minority students with Fermilab technicians, engineers and administrative support staff who mentor them in fields such as data entry, data mining, and cable testing. After working with their mentor in the mornings, they meet with TARGET's team of teachers at Naperville Central High School to work on projects involving optics, electronics, and radio and rocket construction.
"One young man didn't know anything about electronics before the program,
but now he loves assembling circuit boards so much he's considering an
engineering profession," said Dianne Engram, Manager of the Equal Opportunity
Office. "That's the goal -- to encourage students to take the classes in high
school that will prepare them for a technical curriculum in college. This program
shows a commitment of the laboratory to increasing the number of minority
students involved in the technical disciplines, and that's a great way
of preparing America for the future."

Record Number of Employees Attend the Annual PPD Safety Picnic | ||

Approximately 300 employees from the Particle Physics Division gathered outside
the Kuhn Barn on Friday for their annual safety picnic. The unseasonable autumn-
like weather provided the perfect temperature for a comfortable picnic outdoors.
Employees and their family members enjoyed a water balloon toss and other picnic
games. Face painting and sand art were available for the younger members of the
crowd. Fire extinguishers, flashlights, carbon monoxide detectors and other safety
prizes were raffled off periodically throughout the picnic. One of the picnic
organizers, Sue Schultz, said, "Everyone is having a great time. I think that
this is our biggest turnout so far."

But theorists and experimentalists are still arguing about what to call it. Geoff Brumfiel investigates. Work Planning Planning is the key to assuring that work is done correctly and safely. Associate ES&H Section Head Mary Logue recently evaluated Integrated Safety Management at Fermilab. She found that workers are thinking about the hazards
Beginning next week many people will be working on accelerator shutdown tasks. Accelerator Division Senior Safety Officer John Anderson noted that a large number of formal hazard analyses are being required, especially for subcontractor work. In addition, an electronic work list is being used for the first time. This application provides an efficient mechanism for the landlord, the Shutdown Coordinator, and Radiation Safety Officer to review and approve individual tasks. As he did the last time, Accelerator Division Head Roger Dixon will conduct an "all hands" briefing with safety as a major theme. Dixon hopes workers will extend the hazard analysis process to the lowest level, considering what can go wrong with even the simplest tasks and taking appropriate precautions. For some activities, it can be helpful to practice the procedures beforehand. Dixon also hopes for feedback from workers on whether they are receiving the right kind of safety information and support.
