The Tevatron Connection Kicks Off Today On August 9 and 10, CDF, DZero and MiniBooNE will present their newest experimental results at the Tevatron Connection, a series of discussions between experimenters, theorists, and curious Fermilab employees. "CDF and DZero are always producing new results, but up until now there hasn't been a really good way of sharing them with the Fermilab community," said John Womersley, DZero spokesperson and
"In the past, each experiment would try to jam all of its results into a 45 minute seminar, but, of course, only managed to scratch the surface," Womersley said. "The Tevatron Connection will allow longer discussions, and give us an idea of what issues we need to explore in more depth." Discussion topics include B physics, QCD, precision measurements in electroweak physics, and searches for supersymmetry and the Higgs boson. On Monday night, attendees can enjoy food and drinks organized by CDF, DZero, and the Theory Group, with support from URA.
"If the Tevatron Connection is successful, we'll try to make it a regular conference
that will attract physicists from outside the lab community," Womersley said.
"It should be a good time, and everyone's invited. Show up and bring your brain."

Ha Noi (VNA) - More than 250 physicists have gathered in Ha Noi for a six-day workshop entitled "Rencontre du Viet Nam" which opened on Friday.
They are from Viet Nam and 31 other countries and territories all over the world, including the United States, France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Russia, Germany, China, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, the Republic of Korea, Norway, Denmark, the Republic of South Africa, Iran, Israel, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh.

Attentiveness Explained Ouch! Owwww! Doh! Did you ever do something really stupid but did not know why? The fact is that attentiveness is a major factor in more than half of all accidents. Unfortunately, urging people to simply "pay more attention" seldom has a significant or lasting effect. As a coping mechanism, we all develop "mental shortcuts" to selectively block out unnecessary information.
Like other characteristics, people vary in their ability to pick out and use the information that is presented to them. Level of vigilance is a quality that should be considered when selecting workers for specific tasks. Also keep in mind that vigilance can be diminished in a number of ways: fatigue, poor health or drugs. After repeating a task, people develop an expectation about how things work. This has the benefits of reducing stress and improving efficiency. Expected outcomes, however, can also increase the likelihood of an accident if something unusual occurs. On occasion, people will even ignore obvious signs that things are going wrong and behave, incorrectly, as if all is normal. Mental workload is another factor that affects attentiveness. This is a case where too much or too little are both bad. Too much work can tax abilities, while too little can produce complacency. The latter is a concern, especially, in automated processes that are an increasingly common feature at Fermilab.
