A Sense of Scale Goes to Italy | ||

This fall Fermilab's informational video A Sense of Scale makes its way
into Italian universities. Jim Shultz and Fred Ullrich of VMS, who
co-directed the movie in 1998, recently completed the translation with
the help of Giorgio Chiarelli of CDF and five other Italian collaborators.
David Kestenbaum, a former CDF collaborator who now writes for National
Public Radio, wrote the original screenplay.
"It was a complicated process," Shultz said. "Some of the Italians' voices
The video will be shown at physics conventions at the Universities of Rome, Milan, and Bologna, and also during the next Italian Science Week in October 2005. "Fermilab interacts with many Italian institutions, and so I thought the movie would be a good way of teaching Italian students about the lab," said Chiarelli, who commissioned the translated version.
"With A Sense of Scale we spent a lot less time on technical details
and more on the actual experimenters than with earlier movies," said Ullrich.
"We wanted to put physics in popular terms and on a medium accessible to
the general public -- and now that includes the Italian general public."

Next week the collaborations and the local theoretical physicists will get together to talk about the new physics results. A symposium, called the Tevatron Connection, will provide a chance for the Fermilab community to hear and discuss the new results from both experiments before they are presented at the International Conference on High Energy Physics in Beijing. Theorists from Fermilab and nearby universities will give their perspectives. Attendees will also get to hear the latest results from MiniBooNE.
