A Sense of Scale Goes to Italy
Sense of Scale
The cover of Fermilab's A Sense of Scale video with an Italian twist.
This fall Fermilab's informational video A Sense of Scale makes its way into Italian universities. Jim Shultz and Fred Ullrich of VMS, who co-directed the movie in 1998, recently completed the translation with the help of Giorgio Chiarelli of CDF and five other Italian collaborators. David Kestenbaum, a former CDF collaborator who now writes for National Public Radio, wrote the original screenplay.

"It was a complicated process," Shultz said. "Some of the Italians' voices

sounded younger than the physicists they were representing, and some of the script's metaphors didn't translate." To solve this, Shultz made the voices sound older by manipulating them with a computer program, and had several Italians edit the dialogue.

The video will be shown at physics conventions at the Universities of Rome, Milan, and Bologna, and also during the next Italian Science Week in October 2005. "Fermilab interacts with many Italian institutions, and so I thought the movie would be a good way of teaching Italian students about the lab," said Chiarelli, who commissioned the translated version.

"With A Sense of Scale we spent a lot less time on technical details and more on the actual experimenters than with earlier movies," said Ullrich. "We wanted to put physics in popular terms and on a medium accessible to the general public -- and now that includes the Italian general public."

Accelerator Update
July 30 - August 2
- During this 72-hour period Operations established one store that, combined with an existing store, provided approximately 15 hours and 13 minutes of luminosity to the experiments.
- The TeV suffered two store-ending quenches
- The TeV quenched twice more during a dry squeeze
- B0 quadrupole (B0Q3) developed ground fault
- A Linac RF station (LRF4) had LCW leak
- LRF5 power amplifier replaced

Physicists discover dramatic difference in behavior of matter versus antimatter
Physicists conducting the BaBar experiment at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center announced exciting new results demonstrating a dramatic difference in the behavior of matter and antimatter. They submitted their results to the journal Physical Review Letters for online publication Friday July 30th .

Director's Corner
Good Morning!
Mike Witherell
Mike Witherell
The two collaborations, CDF and DZero, have observed and recorded a record number of collisions in the last year. The Computing Division and the collaborations have worked together to reconstruct the massive amount of data offline. Finally, the physicists have analyzed the data summary tapes to produce a broad range of new physics results, on topics such as top and bottom quark physics and searches for supersymmetry and extra dimensions.

Next week the collaborations and the local theoretical physicists will get together to talk about the new physics results. A symposium, called the Tevatron Connection, will provide a chance for the Fermilab community to hear and discuss the new results from both experiments before they are presented at the International Conference on High Energy Physics in Beijing. Theorists from Fermilab and nearby universities will give their perspectives. Attendees will also get to hear the latest results from MiniBooNE.

If you can't make it to Beijing, come to the Tevatron Connection. You can find out more at the Tevatron Connection Web page.

Announcements
Sitewide Emergency Warning System Testing Today
The Sitewide Emergency Warning System is scheduled for testing today at 10:00 a.m. All components and voice interfaces for CDF, DZero, FCC and Wilson Hall will be tested. The test will begin and end with the announcement, "This is a test of the sitewide emergency warning system." Any questions or problems should be reported to Bill James at x8901.

Fermi Singers
Come join the Fermi Singers! The group rehearses in the auditorium at noon on Wednesdays. You bring the voice... we provide the music!
