2004 URA Scholarship Recipients Announced | |

Thirteen high school seniors, all children of Fermilab employees,
were recently awarded URA scholarship awards for their exceptional
SAT scores. Selected from a pool of 42 applicants, they will receive
$4000 annual stipends for their first four years of college.
"The URA scholarship program is competitive because the children of all fulltime Fermilab employees are eligible," said Ezra Heitowit, vice president of the URA. "When the DOE first started funding the awards in the 1970s, many universities waived the tuition for their employees' children who were admitted. Because one of the missions of Fermilab and the URA is to promote education, we are providing an educational opportunity for Fermilab employees' children." "The scholarship supports a variety of majors," said Jeannelle Smith of Employee Relations. "For instance, this year fields of study will include classical languages, biology and business administration. We simply want to help them get through college." As a result, in any given academic year some 40 students are receiving URA scholarships totaling $160,000.
"Many employees feel that these awards have helped their children
to succeed in college," said Heitowit. "The stipend isn't huge,
but it helps offset tuition costs that have been rapidly rising."

Boston University Press Release, July 9, 2004 Global team of physicists upends standard model with discovery of neutrino oscillation, mass Boston University physicist, James Stone, announces findings for U.S. contingent (Boston) -- A team of nearly 100 physicists from around the world have achieved results verifying that the elementary particle known as the neutrino exhibits a distinctive pattern of oscillation. This discovery shows that it is likely that the Standard Model, proposed in the 1970s to describe the fundamental forces and particles that make up all matter, is incomplete. The findings provide the needed confirmation to their previous discovery of neutrino oscillation and give the most precise measurement yet of neutrino mass. read more |

That's Danish for "I'm sweating fat." The combination of
heat and humidity can be a health threat, especially during
summer months. If you need to work outdoors or in an environment
that is not air-conditioned, you can be at risk of heat-related illness.
Roads & Grounds has to deal with outdoor weather on a daily basis. Mike Becker, manager of this group, advises his workers to take frequent breaks, have ready access to drinking water, and make ample use of shade and air-conditioned spaces during hot weather. One particular technique that they use is to hop into an air-conditioned truck for a quick cool-off. Becker also reminds his workers to pay more attention to their well-being and that they will not be reprimanded for taking breaks. Here are some general precautions to help you avoid heat stress.
