Fermilab Supports Energy Department Science Education Initiative

Following the launch today by Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham of a major new Department of Energy initiative for science education, officials of Fermilab expressed support for the new program. At a gathering of researchers and graduate students at Stanford Linear Accelerator Center in Palo Alto, California yesterday, Secretary Abraham outlined a seven-point program to use resources of DOE and its national laboratories to improve science education for the nation's students.

"As a DOE national laboratory, Fermilab has a longstanding commitment to strengthening science education," said Fermilab Director Michael S. Witherell. "Secretary Abraham's initiative will help to leverage the unique resources at Fermilab and other DOE national laboratories around the country. By connecting students and teachers with the excitement of research, we have the opportunity to inspire and educate the next generation of scientists."

PPD's Paul Nienaber Wins Fermi Linux Logo Contest

Paul Nienaber, guest scientist in PPD and collaborator on MiniBooNE, won first place in the Fermi Linux Logo Contest by redrawing the Linux penguin using geometric patterns. "I wanted to make a logo that was simple enough to be easily reproducible, but also engaging," said Nienaber. "The Linux Penguin is universally recognizable in geekdom, so it was just a matter of giving it a Fermilab spin."

Elizabeth Clements of the Office of Public Affairs, Mark Kaletka of the Computing Division and Fred Ullrich of Visual Media Services judged the contest. "The goal of the contest was to create a standard logo that everyone could recognize," said Ullrich. "Nienaber's use of simple, elegant lines and ellipses made his design easily identifiable, elegant, and an overall great picture." The new logo will appear on the main page of the Fermi Linux website, as well as on the Fermi Linux installation CDs.

Harry Cheung of the PPD received third place for his line drawing of a buffalo, with "Linux" written below it, and Dinker Charak of the Computing Division took second place for his design, which replaced the "n" in "Linux" with an image of Wilson Hall. "They were both very creative images," said Nienaber. "I'm surprised I won."

Fermilab Singers Showcase Musical Talent
Fermi Singers
The Fermilab Singers take a bow at Wednesday's concert. (Click on image for larger version.)
For one half-hour Wednesday, the Fermilab Singers entertained a crowd in Ramsey Auditorium with their annual summer concert. The 26-member choir presented 10 songs from the 1600s to the 1900s, including "Cantate Domino" by Monteverdi, the traditional Scottish song "Loch Lomond" and "The Way You Look Tonight" by Jerome Kern.

"I thought it went really, really well," said Tamsin Edwards, a graduate student from the University of Manchester working on the DZero experiment, and the Fermilab Singers' music director for the past six months. "Everyone took it up another level from rehearsal -- it was really fantastic."

The Singers will be back to work next Wednesday at noon in the auditorium, preparing new songs for their next concert. Membership in the Singers is open to all Fermilab and DOE employees, contractors, users and adult family members-to join, visit their website or show up at a rehearsal.
