Twenty-Six Fermilab Employees Receive Employee Performance Recognition Awards | ||

On June 29, 26 employees received Employee Performance Recognition Awards.
After a gourmet luncheon at Chez Leon, Fermilab Director Michael Witherell handed
out the awards. "It's employees like these, who give so much more than their job
requires, that make the lab what it is," Witherell said.

From PhysicsWeb, July 1, 2004 Peter Higgs: the man behind the boson This month 40 years ago Peter Higgs wrote two papers that might explain the origins of mass. However, as Peter Rodgers discovers, he is reluctant to take too much of the credit.
Symmetry is a powerful concept in physics, but sometimes you can have too much of it. If
the Standard Model of particle physics were perfectly symmetric, none of the particles in
the model would have any mass. Looked at another way, the fact that most fundamental particles
have non-zero masses breaks some of the symmetry in the model. Something must therefore be
generating the masses of the particles and breaking the symmetry of the model. That something -
which has yet to be detected in an experiment - is called the Higgs field.

As a result of this, particle physics is particularly vulnerable to the visa problems that are harming all fields of science. A group of 25 science, engineering, and education organizations issued a statement in May calling for revisions in visa policies for students and scientists. Helen Quinn of SLAC signed the statement as the President of the American Physical Society. The statement says, "If action is not taken soon to improve the visa system, the misperception that the United States does not welcome international students, scholars, and scientists will grow.... The damage to our nation's higher education and scientific enterprises, economy, and national security would be irreparable. The United States cannot hope to maintain its present scientific and economic leadership position if it becomes isolated from the rest of the world."
Here at Fermilab we have a particularly big stake in finding a solution to the visa problems that allows our
science to remain truly international.
