Tevatron Has Best Week Ever
Last week the Tevatron produced a record number of proton-antiproton collisions, achieving an integrated luminosity of 18.6 inverse picobarn for the entire week. "This was a phenomenal week," said Dave McGinnis at the All Experimenters Meeting on June 28. "Lots of stores with high initial luminosities and little turnaround time between stores. We were popping in one store after another." The DZero experiment recorded 38 percent more collisions than during the previous best week, and CDF was swamped by data as well. The current week began with the loss of beam in the Tevatron due to vibrations caused by a mild earthquake on Monday morning, June 28, at 1:10 a.m. about 30 miles from Fermilab.

On June 10, Fermilab was presented the 2004 Employer Member of the Year Award by the National GEM Consortium. Dianne Engram, manager of the Equal Opportunity Office and interim manager of the Employment Office, traveled to GEM's annual conference in Las Vegas to accept the award on behalf of the laboratory.

"It was exciting," said Engram. "I had always thought that we were a very small part of the GEM program. It appears that all the things we do to help the GEM infrastructure have been appreciated."

The consortium recognized Engram for her success in increasing the numbers of GEM Fellows selected by the laboratory, and in pairing the Fellows with Fermilab's GEM alumni, who serve as internship mentors. Fermilab's recognition by GEM, a nonprofit graduate education organization providing underrepresented groups the opportunity to earn graduate degrees in science and engineering while gaining practical work experience through internships, was first featured in the May 5, 2004 edition of Fermilab Today.

Accelerator Update
June 25 - June 28
- During this 72 hour period of time, operations established three stores that, added to an existing store, provided approximately 51 hours and 53 minutes of luminosity to the experiments.
- The vibrations from two earthquakes hit Fermilab causing the loss of one store
- A power glitch trips feeder 31 and hits Fixed Target areas and CHL
- Recycler stashes antiprotons

Director's Corner
Good Morning!
Mike Witherell
Mike Witherell
Four weeks ago, everyone was very pleased when the collider had a record week with 13.5 pb-1 of integrated luminosity. That short-lived record was surpassed by a surprising 37% last week, when 18.5 pb-1 was delivered! During June, already the best month on record, we may exceed 60 pb-1. At this rate, to accumulate a data sample equal to the entire sample from Run I takes only about two months.

The initial luminosity in each store and the weekly integrated luminosity are both running about a factor of two higher than a year ago. The integrated luminosity for fiscal year 2004 has already exceeded the base goal of 230 pb-1, and we are running about three weeks ahead of the design curve.

All the people who have contributed to the accelerator upgrades and operational improvements over the last year should take great pride in what has been accomplished. It has been a very good year.

Announcements
June PC Manager Meeting
The June PC Manager Meeting will be on Wednesday, June 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on WH8X. The main topic will be using the new Site Terminal Service. The system is designed to provide a flexible Windows environment for Linux/Unix, Macintosh and Windows users that need access to key Windows based applications and Windows based file repositories in the Fermi domain. Plus updates on licensing and a brief review of a visit to Dell Computers! (Not to mention donuts and free stuff too!)

Free Book Exchange
The Fermilab Library (3rd floor of Wilson Hall) runs a free book exchange. We have a wide selection of novels for your reading enjoyment. Simply take them, and bring them back when you're done (and please feel free to drop off any other books you might like to contribute). For questions call the Library on x3401, or email library@fnal.gov.

Children's Treasure Hunt - Registration Deadline July 5
A Children's Treasure Hunt, for children 5 - 12 yrs. of age, will be held at the Village Pool on July 23 from 9 AM - 11:00AM. This two-hour event offers an introduction to the safe use of snorkeling gear and the aquatic environment. Cost of the event is $20.00 per child. This includes an introduction to snorkeling basics, a treasure hunt in an artificial reef environment, pirate's treasure to keep, use of snorkel gear and a personal snorkel to keep. Children must know how to swim and be comfortable in the water. Maximum of 20 children will be accepted. Registration can be made in the Recreation Office. The deadline to register is JULY 5. No refunds will be made after the deadline date unless class is canceled. Registration forms can be found on the Recreation web page or in the Recreation Office.

Discount AMC Movie Tickets
Be prepared to catch the hottest new summer movies. Discounted AMC tickets are available in the Recreation Office for $5.75 each. Keep a few on hand, these don't expire until 2005. Tickets may be purchased in the Recreation Office, by mail or by phone with a credit card.
