Tevatron Has Best Week Ever Last week the Tevatron produced a record number of proton-antiproton collisions, achieving an integrated luminosity of 18.6 inverse picobarn for the entire week. "This was a phenomenal week," said Dave McGinnis at the All Experimenters Meeting on June 28. "Lots of stores with high initial luminosities and little turnaround time between stores. We were popping in one store after another." The DZero experiment recorded 38 percent more collisions than during the previous best week, and CDF was swamped by data as well. The current week began with the loss of beam in the Tevatron due to vibrations caused by a mild earthquake on Monday morning, June 28, at 1:10 a.m. about 30 miles from Fermilab. |

Fermilab Receives 2004 GEM Employer Member of the Year Award | ||

On June 10, Fermilab was presented the 2004 Employer Member of the Year Award by the National GEM Consortium. Dianne Engram, manager of the Equal Opportunity Office and interim manager of the Employment Office, traveled to GEM's annual conference in Las Vegas to accept the award on behalf of the laboratory.
"It was exciting," said Engram. "I had always thought that we were a very small part of the GEM program. It appears that all the things we do to help the GEM infrastructure have been appreciated."
The consortium recognized Engram for her success in increasing the numbers of GEM Fellows selected by the laboratory, and in pairing the Fellows with Fermilab's GEM alumni, who serve as internship mentors. Fermilab's recognition by GEM, a nonprofit graduate education organization providing underrepresented groups the opportunity to earn graduate degrees in science and engineering while gaining practical work experience through internships, was first featured in the May 5, 2004 edition of Fermilab Today.

The initial luminosity in each store and the weekly integrated luminosity are both running about a factor of two higher than a year ago. The integrated luminosity for fiscal year 2004 has already exceeded the base goal of 230 pb-1, and we are running about three weeks ahead of the design curve.
All the people who have contributed to the accelerator upgrades and operational
improvements over the last year should take great pride in what has been
accomplished. It has been a very good year.

June PC Manager Meeting The June PC Manager Meeting will be on Wednesday, June 30 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. on WH8X. The main topic will be using the new Site Terminal Service.
