Electrical Town Hall Meeting Today
Electrical Safety Sub-Committee
The Fermilab Electrical Safety Sub-Committee (Click on image for larger version.)
In honor of Electrical Safety Month, the Fermilab Electrical Safety Subcommittee is hosting an Electrical Town Hall meeting today from 11:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in One West. "The Town Hall meeting will be a very informal open session with experienced people who will field questions about electrical safety and electricity at Fermilab," said NuMI Electrical Project Engineer Bob Ducar, who is also a member of the Electrical Safety Subcommittee. "We are open to a variety of electrical questions."

From lockout/tagout procedures to the cost of electricity to concerns about woodpeckers, Ducar hopes today's meeting will have a wide range of questions. Ducar encourages employees to ask questions about electrical safety at home. "We are equally concerned if someone gets hurt here or at home," he said. "We are there to answer your questions."

And for an extra incentive, the panel of electrical experts will hand out door prizes when someone asks a "good" question. There will also be a drawing for a grand prize at the end of the meeting. If you have any questions, contact Bob Ducar.

Accelerator Update
May 21 - May 24
- During this weekend Operations established two stores that provided the experiments with approximately 34 hours and 2 minutes of luminosity.
- Many problems by the TeV, MI, Pbar, and Booster machines, plus CDF and D0, led to a long delay before Operations established the first weekend store.

Letter to the Editor - The Visa Thicket, and the Brain Drain
To the Editor:

Re "A Visa Quagmire" (editorial, May 17):

Our research universities continue to be the best anywhere. Unless we develop a better process for reviewing visas, we are about to conduct a grand experiment on the causal relationship between scientific leadership and the long-term health of our economy.

We cannot solve this problem simply by weaning ourselves from dependence on foreign scientists and engineers.

For the United States to remain the world's leader in science, we must compete successfully for the best scientific talent around the world and get more of the best American students to become scientists and engineers.

Director's Corner
Good Morning!
Mike Witherell
Mike Witherell
The Fermilab Long Range Planning Committee has completed their excellent report, The Coming Revolution in Particle Physics, in response to a charge to describe alternative scenarios for Fermilab in the next decade. The report is available online.

Drawing on their report, I wrote a brief document, Discovery at Fermilab: The Next Twenty Years, giving a vision of the next twenty years at Fermilab. In it I also describe what we are doing now to optimize the future opportunities for discovery.

I would like to thank the chair of the Long Range Planning Committee, Hugh Montgomery, the deputy chair Steve Holmes, and all of the members of the committee for their contributions to this important effort. Almost 100 people participated in drafting the reports of the subcommittees that fed into the final report. They all did Fermilab and U.S. particle physics a great service.

Updating the Fermilab Phonebook
Fermilab phonebook
BSS printed the last phonebook in 2000.
The Business Services Section is in the process of updating the print version of Fermilab's phonebook. BSS printed the last phonebook in 2000 and asks all employees to check their listings in the online phone directory as soon as possible. If any changes are needed, please fill out the Fermilab Employee Data Form by June 30. The new phonebooks will be mailed to employees when they are published this fall.

Announcements
PC Manager Meeting Tomorrow
The next PC Manager Meeting will be on May 26 from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m. in WH8XO. The main topic will be, "Windows Software Licensing Roundtable." There have been a few questions here and there about the Microsoft Enterprise Agreement as well as other software. If you have questions about installing, tracking, and requesting software or think CD could do a better job helping you out then this meeting is for you!
