Electrical Safety Month Profiles In connection with Electrical Safety Month, Fermilab Today offers a series of profiles recognizing Electrical Safety Managers at Fermilab. Electrical Safety Manager Jim Ranson As the electrical coordinator and a task manager for the Accelerator Division, Jim Ranson makes sure that electrical projects are completed correctly and safely. In dealing with AD electrical projects, Ranson writes up detailed hazard analyses
"We emphasize safety," said Ranson. "We make sure that all electricians' tools are up to date, that there are no hazards in the area, and that they have the correct personal protection equipment." Ranson began working for Fermilab 27 years ago as a technician for the Booster and became AD electrical coordinator in 1998. Shutdown periods are Ranson's busiest time, when the number of electricians working on AD projects jumps from a handful to thirty or more.
"I really enjoy my job," said Ranson. "It's rewarding, I get a chance to work
on everything, new and old, in the AD footprint area, and there's never a dull
moment."

My topic today is not particularly new; many other authors have discussed the relationship between quality of science and diversity of support. But you may not be aware of how far back the tradition of encouraging a diversity of interests within the U.S. government structures can be traced. It is a feature of American society from the beginnings of our Republic.

New Policy for Fermilab Today's Classified Ads Fermilab has long been known for its popular classified ads, which shifted to Fermilab Today from Ferminews last September. But with the ads available only online, they have become more visible and susceptible to misuse. After consulting with laboratory officials, Fermilab Today now requires that people placing classified ads must belong to one of these categories:

Fermilab Gymnasium Closed From 8-4 Today The gymnasium will be closed today from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., for FESS to replace the gym lights and fix the scoreboard, and for the carpenter shop to repair insulation in the roof. The rest of the Recreation Facility will be open as usual.
