Fermilab Receives Two Awards from the National Safety Council | ||

On Friday, April 30, Director Mike Witherell and DOE Fermilab Area Office Manager Jane Monhart
accepted two safety awards from the National Safety Council on the behalf of
the laboratory. "Fermilab's safety records have become a lasting legacy of the
laboratory," Witherell said. "This is a great achievement, and we plan to keep
doing it again and again."
The Green Cross for Safety Excellence Achievement Award recognizes employers who reported injuries and illnesses that involved days away from work at a rate less than or equal to 50% of the Bureau of Labor Statistics' rate for their Standard Industrial Classification Code. Fermilab's rate for this type of case was .02. The BLS rate for other research and development laboratories was .6. The Recognition of Significant Improvement Award acknowledges employers who reduce the number of injuries and illnesses that involved days away from work and the number of fatalities by at least 20%. The laboratory reduced the number of this type of case by 85%, which is well beyond the requirement for the award. "We knocked that one out of the ball park," said Associate Director Jed Brown.
Monhart added, "I have all of the confidence that Fermilab has the will

We're so close to finding answers to these questions that physicists around the globe are urging construction of one of the biggest projects in the history of science: a 20-mile-long particle accelerator known as the linear collider.

More properly referred to as Relocatable Power Taps, these devices must be used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Only the better quality RPTs that are certified or listed by Underwriters Laboratories are acceptable for use at the Lab. Unfortunately, the limitations of the certification are typically unknown to the end user. More to the point, OSHA's standard 29 CFR 1910.303(b)(2) requires that listed or labeled equipment shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling.
