Fermilab Receives Two Awards from the National Safety Council

On Friday, April 30, Director Mike Witherell and DOE Fermilab Area Office Manager Jane Monhart accepted two safety awards from the National Safety Council on the behalf of the laboratory. "Fermilab's safety records have become a lasting legacy of the laboratory," Witherell said. "This is a great achievement, and we plan to keep doing it again and again."

The Green Cross for Safety Excellence Achievement Award recognizes employers who reported injuries and illnesses that involved days away from work at a rate less than or equal to 50% of the Bureau of Labor Statistics' rate for their Standard Industrial Classification Code. Fermilab's rate for this type of case was .02. The BLS rate for other research and development laboratories was .6.

The Recognition of Significant Improvement Award acknowledges employers who reduce the number of injuries and illnesses that involved days away from work and the number of fatalities by at least 20%. The laboratory reduced the number of this type of case by 85%, which is well beyond the requirement for the award. "We knocked that one out of the ball park," said Associate Director Jed Brown.

Monhart added, "I have all of the confidence that Fermilab has the will and the talent to keep doing better and better. Everyone at Fermilab should be proud."

Accelerator Update
April 28 - April 30
- During the last forty-eight hours operations established two stores that provided approximately 31 hours and 45 minutes of luminosity to the experiments.
- The Main Injector suffered many ramp trips.
- The TeV shot setup halted due to a cogging problem.
- The H- Source received new hydrogen bottle

Unlocking Universe Mysteries
By Dawn Marie Woodward
What is the universe made of? What new forces are at work? We're so close to finding answers to these questions that physicists around the globe are urging construction of one of the biggest projects in the history of science: a 20-mile-long particle accelerator known as the linear collider.

An Oregonian is one of three leaders of what's known as the World Wide Study. Jim Brau, director of the University of Oregon's Center for High Energy Physics, returned this week from a meeting in Paris where an unprecedented consensus was announced.

Safety Tip
Power Strips
Power strip
An overloaded power
strip?
Power strips typically have multiple outlets, a power switch, a circuit breaker, and a grounded flexible power cord. Some also provide surge protection and/or electronic noise filtering. Best of all, they are inexpensive and readily available. Although we may think of them as the Swiss army knife of electrical power, power strips actually have a fairly narrow range of acceptable applications. This explains why their use was cited hundreds of times in OSHA's recent inspection of the lab.

More properly referred to as Relocatable Power Taps, these devices must be used in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. Only the better quality RPTs that are certified or listed by Underwriters Laboratories are acceptable for use at the Lab. Unfortunately, the limitations of the certification are typically unknown to the end user. More to the point, OSHA's standard 29 CFR 1910.303(b)(2) requires that listed or labeled equipment shall be installed and used in accordance with any instructions included in the listing or labeling. This means the following for RPTs that are listed by UL:

  • Most RPTs are acceptable for use indoors and in dry locations only.
  • RPTs are designed to accept multiple low-power loads such as computers, peripherals, telephones, battery chargers or audio/visual components. Inappropriate high-power loads include refrigerators, coffee pots, space heaters, microwave ovens, toasters and toaster ovens.
  • RPTs are generally rated for 15 amps of current. Be careful not to exceed the current rating of your RPT. If the cord powering the RPT is warm to the touch, the current load is most likely too high. If you need help in determining the loads, ask someone in your area who has electrical knowledge.
  • The Laboratory's Electrical Safety Subcommittee strongly recommends that you use only RPTs that have an integral circuit breaker.

Have a great day and let's work safely all week!
