Fermilab Welcomes Buffalo Fans
Baby bison with mom
The first baby bison born at Fermilab on April 12 strolls behind Mom. (Click on image for larger version.)
Fermilab invites buffalo fans to visit its herd of about 50 buffalo (more correctly, American bison), including 16 young animals born since April 12. At the current level of security ("yellow alert"), visitors may come to Fermilab's Pine Street entrance and receive a Buffalo Viewing Pass. The pass allows unescorted visitors to drive to the buffalo pasture to view the herd. Driving is restricted to selected roads leading to and from the buffalo pasture. Bicyclists currently are allowed access to the site without the need for a pass.

The Buffalo Viewing Pass allows everybody, especially families with small children, to view the pasture where the young buffalo roam under the watchful eyes of "Mom and Dad Buffalo." This spring, Fermilab expects the birth of 25 buffalo babies.

Volunteers Needed for Ask-a-Scientist
Ask-a-Scientist
Fermilab scientists who volunteer for the Ask-a-Scientist program.
Over the past years, Fermilab has hosted a Sunday afternoon program, inviting the public to visit the lab and meet with members of our scientific staff. After 9/11, Ask-a-Scientist evolved into a more formal once-a-month program in association with the Lederman Science Education Center staff. The program is usually held on the afternoon of the first Sunday of each month and lasts about two and a half hours. So far this year, Ask-a-Scientist has averaged approximately 105 visitors for each of the four Sunday afternoons.

"Many of us find Ask-a-Scientist to be a very rewarding way to spend a Sunday afternoon," said Peter Garbincius, Fermilab physicist and one of the organizers of the Ask-a-Scientist program. "You get to meet the lab's neighbors and find out what they think about science and Fermilab. We have some scientists who regularly sign up for many of these programs every year."

Ask-a-Scientist needs additional volunteers. No preparation is required, and volunteers are welcome to sign up for a single session. If you are a scientist interested in participating, please contact Peter Garbincius, x3693, peterg@fnal.gov

Accelerator Update
April 23 - April 26
- Over the weekend Operations established two stores that when added to an existing store provided the experiments approximately 56 hours and 20 minutes of luminosity.
- Operation had trouble extracting antiprotons from Pbar for TeV store
- Meson lost some beam time due to sump alarm
- Operations forced to abort TeV protons due to separator problem
- Linac beam down on Monday morning due to a problem with the Klystron RF water skid

In the News
From the Kane County Chronicle, April 23, 2004:
Liquid nitrogen takes Fermilab stage
By Eric Schelkopf
BATAVIA — Kevin Reid learned Thursday that bananas are not just for eating.

Reid and other youngsters watched with amazement as Fermilab employee Jerry Zimmerman lowered a banana into a vat of liquid nitrogen.

After a few minutes, Zimmerman removed the banana. It looked the same, but then Zimmerman used the banana to hammer a nail into a piece of wood.

Director's Corner
Good Morning!
Mike Witherell
Mike Witherell
Last Friday I welcomed a large part of Fermilab's administrative staff to the auditorium as part of Administrative Professionals Week. In the few minutes of my welcome, I told the group that the recent DOE Operations Review had concluded that the laboratory was lean and operated well with relatively small administrative staff. This helps the laboratory to make the case that we use the federal funds given us to carry out the research program efficiently.

Many of us see the dedication and hard work of those who work immediately around us at the laboratory, but we don't have firsthand knowledge about whether that's the case in other parts of the laboratory. The answer is an emphatic yes. To an extraordinary degree the Fermilab staff is committed to the mission of the laboratory and takes pride in contributing to the laboratory's success. Thanks to all of the people who make Fermilab work well.

Correction
Yesterday's Safety Tip stated that the truck carrying the MINOS planes enters the Ring Road at DO. The truck actually enters the Ring Road at C0. Fermilab Today regrets the error.

Brown Bag Seminar
Human Resources presents a Brown Bag Seminar HR Q&A Session on Wednesday, April 28 from noon to 1:00 p.m. The seminar will take place in the Huddle Conference Room, which is located in the Accelerator Division Cross Gallery. Bring your lunch and ask questions of: Kay Van Vreede (Section Head), Juanita Frazier (Employee Relations), Borys Jurkiw (Compensation/Visa), Dianne Engram (Employment/EOO) and Scott Lindsey (Benefits). This is not a presentation. This Brown Bag Seminar is an opportunity for you to ask general questions. If you have question of a private or personal nature, you should see the Human Resources group on the 15th floor.
