"A successful 8-pack test will serve as a 'proof of principle' of the fundamental elements of the NLC," said Project Engineer Harry Carter. "Fermilab built six RF structures for the test, four of which are installed in the 8-pack along with four fabricated by SLAC and KEK."

The Fermilab team of technicians, engineers, physicists and a mathematician has been working on the project for two and a half years. RF design, mechanical design and assembly and low-power testing are carried out at the lab's RF structure factory in Industrial Building 4. Several versions of the structures have been produced at the lab, with one more version planned. The current version is 60 cm long and contains 52 copper cells of slightly different internal dimensions.

Highlights of the day include a special rescue re-enactment by the Fermilab Fire Department, the Cryogenics Show with Jerry Zimmerman in Ramsey Auditorium, Butterflies at Fermilab with Tom Peterson and the buffalo pasture visit with herdsman Don Hanson. These events are open to all comers, and special DASTOW buses will provide transportation.
