Fermilab scientists and technicians working on radiofrequency
research and development for the Next Linear Collider
reached a milestone two weeks ago, when the final RF structure
to be used in a test of the X-band Linear Collider technology
was shipped to SLAC. In the upcoming "8-pack" test, the RF
structures will be used with high-power klystrons to demonstrate
the high-accelerating gradient performance of the technology.
"A successful 8-pack test will serve as a 'proof of principle'
of the fundamental elements of the NLC," said Project Engineer
Harry Carter. "Fermilab built six RF structures for the test,
four of which are installed in the 8-pack along with four
fabricated by SLAC and KEK."
The Fermilab team of technicians, engineers, physicists and a
mathematician has been working on the project for two
and a half years. RF design, mechanical design and assembly
and low-power testing are carried out at the lab's RF
structure factory in Industrial Building 4. Several
versions of the structures have been produced at the
lab, with one more version planned. The current version
is 60 cm long and contains 52 copper cells of slightly
different internal dimensions.

Fermilab's annual Daughters and Sons to Work (DASTOW)
and Earth Day activities will celebrate the lab's valued
connections with employees and their families tomorrow, April 22.
Highlights of the day include a special rescue re-enactment
by the Fermilab Fire Department, the Cryogenics Show with
Jerry Zimmerman in Ramsey Auditorium, Butterflies at Fermilab
with Tom Peterson and the buffalo pasture
visit with herdsman Don Hanson. These events are open
to all comers, and special DASTOW buses will provide transportation.
If you haven't signed up for the cafeteria lunch yet, please place your
orders today so we have an approximate count for ordering hot dogs.
And don't forget to smile for the official DASTOW Group Portrait
on the front steps of Wilson Hall at 8:50 a.m. An information desk will
be set up in the Atrium, where you can also register for education programs.
The Roads and Grounds Department will sponsor its annual
Earth Day tree planting and a picnic lunch beginning
at 11:30 a.m., so plan to bring your work clothes
and your appetite.
Remember, the No.1 priority for DASTOW and Earth Day is
for everyone to have a safe day. We look forward to seeing
you and your families tomorrow.

Shattered Glass
Seeking the densest matter: the color glass condensate
By David Appell
Physicists investigating heavy-particle collisions believe they are on the track of a universal form of matter, one common to very high energy particles ranging from protons to heavy nuclei such as uranium. Some think that this matter, called a color glass condensate, may explain new nuclear properties and the process of particle formation during collisions. Experimentalists have recently reported intriguing data that suggest a color glass condensate has actually formed in past work.
