New HEPAP Report Outlines Revolution in Particle Physics
|
Persis Drell, committee chair |
Washington, DC - The most compelling questions facing contemporary particle physics research and a program to address them have been distilled into a new report "Quantum Universe: The Revolution in 21st-Century Particle Physics," adopted today by the Department of Energy/National Science Foundation High Energy Physics Advisory Panel (HEPAP).
The discovery that the universe is made mostly of unknown forms of matter and energy called "dark matter" and "dark energy" has revolutionized the scientific outlook for particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology. The "Quantum Universe" report responds to a November request to HEPAP from DOE and NSF for a report that "will illuminate the issues and provide a clear picture of the connected, complementary experimental approaches to the truly exciting scientific questions of this century."

The Wednesday Night Bowling League, known as the FermTherms,
just completed its 2004 season, with an exciting final
game between two head-to-head teams -- Team-X and Airborne.
The 2004 FermTherms champions are the Airborne
players Albert Dyer, Chuck Marofske, Terry O'Brien and League
President Al Legan. "There were many nights of intense competition,"
said Legan, who is a member of the Accelerator Division.
The Wednesday Night Bowling League, which plays at Bowling
Green in West Chicago, began over 20 years ago at Fermilab.
The season starts right after Labor Day and runs for approximately
30 weeks. The league is made up of ten four-person teams,
and the majority of the players are Fermilab employees.
"When the league first started, the teams were made up
of employees from Fermilab and Nicor, which is why we called
ourselves the FermTherms," Legan said. "Most of the Nicor
players have retired by now, but there is still a handful
of people left from Nicor." If you are interested in
joining the Wednesday Night Bowling League, contact
Al Legan. "We are always recruiting new members,"
he said. "We would like to thank everyone who bowled this season,
and we hope to see everyone and more back next year."

"We live in an age when the exploration of great questions is leading toward a revolutionary new understanding of the universe."
This line if from the new report, Quantum Universe: The Revolution in 21st Century Particle Physics, which a 16-member committee submitted to the High Energy Physics Advisory Panel yesterday. Persis Drell of SLAC was the chair of the committee, which had four members from the Fermilab staff: Rocky Kolb, Joe Lykken, John Womersley, and Judy Jackson. The committee was charged with identifying the key scientific questions for particle physics and discussing the connection of those questions with the fields of nuclear physics, cosmology, and astrophysics.
The Quantum Universe starts with the scientific questions that will guide us to a revolution in our understanding of matter, energy, space and time. It organizes these questions into three themes:
- Einstein's Dream of Unified Forces
- The Particle World
- The Birth of the Universe
The report then discusses ten major scientific facilities that are most likely to answer those questions over the next 15 years. Three of those facilities are operating or will be built at Fermilab: the Tevatron, NuMI/MINOS, and BTeV. The LHC, which will be the focus of a large part of Fermilab by the end of this decade, is given a particularly large role in the future revolution. Finally, three of the major projects figure strongly in the longer laboratory future as described by the Fermilab Long-range Planning Committee: the Linear Collider, a neutrino superbeam (Proton Driver), and the Joint Dark Energy Mission. Fermilab is also the home of several of the smaller facilities described.
Although the Quantum Universe is a report about the entire field of particle physics, it emphasizes the central role that Fermilab will play in the coming revolution.

April 16 - April 19
- Operations established three stores during this period of time.
Those stores provided approximately 25 hours and 34 minutes of luminosity to the
experiments.
- TeV suffered two quenches due to antiproton kicker problems.
- A TeV separator problem required Operations to terminate a store.
