First Baby Buffalo Born at Fermilab
Baby buffalo
Four days old and already running! The first baby buffalo of the season was born at Fermilab on April 12. (Click on image for larger version.)
It's that time of year! The first baby buffalo of the season was born at Fermilab on Monday, April 12. Fermilab buffalo herdsman Don Hanson reports that mom and baby are doing very well. The sex of the calf has not been determined yet. Hanson explained that it is often difficult to tell the sex of the calves when they are first born. Fermilab's buffalo herd currently has 27 cows, 3 bulls and one calf. Hanson expects 24 to 25 calves to be born this year. "We are right on schedule," Hanson said. "Every year, I expect the first calf to be born around April 14 or 15. This first calf was actually three days early." Hanson expects to have half a dozen more calves by next week.

In the News
From Sun Publications, April 15, 2004:
Hey, Bob, here's why I'm sold on Batavia
...Let me start with a little history, Bob. At its heart, Batavia is a river town. The Fox River carved the valley and served as a source of fish, water and transportation for American Indians. Later, the river fed the industry that sprang up along its banks, including our famed windmill factories. Today, the Fox River remains a wellspring of community pride.

...The Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, by the way, is the center of the universe — at least when it comes to particle physics research, exploring how the universe is put together. The lab employs hundreds of genius scientists who come from all over the world to live and work.
