Two Great Horned Owls Returned Safely to Their Nest in the Fermilab Village

Last Wednesday, FESS employees safely returned
two baby great horned owls to their nest
after Eric Mieland of ES&H found
them on the
ground in the Fermilab Village. Bob Lootens of Roads & Grounds explained
that it is not clear how the baby owls fell out of their nest.
Perhaps a raccoon knocked them to the ground.
"When it comes
to nature, the best thing to do is to get it back to the nest as
soon as possible before the mother returns," he said.
FESS employees
used a bucket-truck and some heavy duty rubber gloves
to return the two owls to their nest. Mike Becker of Roads & Grounds
reported that the mother flew past the bucket while raising
the babies to the nest.
"The owls appeared to be about 3-5 weeks old," he said.
"One looked very healthy, the other was a little smaller but
looked fairly healthy."

April 9 - April 12
- During this period Operations established two stores.
One store was short lived
and never provided useful luminosity. An existing store plus
one good store provided
approximately 24 hours and 13 minutes of luminosity to the
experiments.
- The TeV suffered two quenches.
- Recycler took shots of antiprotons from Pbar.

From the Chicago Sun-Times, April 9, 2004:
Strong acting is 'Proof' positive that casting choices were right
There are two ways to look at director Chuck Smith's fascinating
production of "Proof," the 2001 Pulitzer Prize-winning play
by David Auburn now at the Goodman Theatre....
"Proof," set in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, is the story of
Catherine (Karen Aldridge), a young woman who fears her exceptional gift
-- possibly genius -- for math may also come with a propensity for
mental illness.

Good Morning!

We are counting down the final steps to having the MINOS neutrino
detector on the air. Yesterday the team installing the near
detector was able to meet the full-production rate for installing
planes underground. This means that the installation of the near
detector, which consists of 282 planes of steel and 153 planes of
scintillator, should be completed this fall, right on schedule.
As you might recall, the far detector, consisting of 486 planes
of steel and scintillator with a mass of over 5 kilotons, has
been observing atmospheric neutrinos in the Soudan mine for eight
months. The experimenters will use the relative number of neutrino
interactions in the near and far detectors to measure the neutrino
oscillation rate, that is, the rate at which the muon neutrinos
produced with the NuMI beam change into some other flavor.
At the rate of present progress, we will start operating
MINOS in January, only nine months away.

Reminder: Meet with Members of the Director Search Committee
Spaces Still Available
A limited number of laboratory community
members can meet individually with subgroups of the Fermilab Director Search
Committee on Thursday, April 15. The 10-minute meetings will be
held between 5:45 - 6:45 p.m. in several meeting rooms in Wilson Hall.
If you wish to participate, please sign up in advance by sending a
message as soon as possible to Jean Boutchyard in the URA
Headquarters Office. Committee members will be able to meet
with the first 36 people who sign up. The Committee also encourages
members of the lab community to provide their views and candidate
nominations in confidence via e-mail at
search@ura.nw.dc.us, or via
the "Comments" section of the
Search website.
