Fermilab Design: Past, Present and Future Fermilab Signs of the Times | ||

Over the past year, employees, users and visitors have seen a change in the way they are welcome to Fermilab and directed to places on site. The signs subcommittee of the Design Task Force worked with Roads and Grounds employees to design and install new signs at all laboratory entrances. The new site entrance signs, installed in July 2003, use the Fermilab core color NAL blue, the logo as specified in the Fermilab Graphic Standards, and an updated format to emphasize a friendly greeting. There are also new directional signs across the site.
"The new directional signs are based on Illinois Department of Transportation standards," said Fred Ullrich, manager of Visual Media Services and a member of the sign subcommittee. "Eventually all directional signs on site will be replaced using the new standards." The directional signs feature IDOT color standards such as green for directions and roads; blue for places and buildings; and brown for recreational spots. The new signs have been grouped together more efficiently to reduce the total number of sign posts at Fermilab.

| Institute of Physics Press Release, April 5, 2004: Public don't know the difference between quarks and DNA A survey commissioned by the Institute of Physics (IoP) has found that a staggering 98 percent of UK adults don't know what the world around us is made of. Just under two percent of those asked gave the right answer, quarks, the basic building blocks of all matter in the universe. The survey asked over 500 people what makes up the nucleus of an atom, and reveals a surprising lack of knowledge of nuclear physics which generates almost 25% of the UK's electricity supply, and provides the isotopes used in over 27,000 medical procedures every day. read more |

Poet Alfred Lord Tennyson said, "In the Spring a young man's fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love." Well, why should Canada Geese be any different? All around the lab at this time of year, goose pairs are tending to mates and nests full of eggs. Their responsibilities include protecting against all threats, real or imagined. Those perceived threats often come from Fermilab employees.
Each year, a few employees sustain minor injuries in altercations with exuberant goose parents. Almost all of these mishaps occur because of the humans' own exuberance in avoiding or attacking geese rather than any evil intent on the part of the birds. The best way to avoid problems with geese during spring time is simply to stay away from them. Use an alternate door for the few weeks the geese will be attached to the nesting spot, or just take a few seconds to walk around the area rather than "challenging" their territory. The lab has a limited ability to prevent problems in critical areas, such as temporary fences between nests and walkways, or deterrent chemicals to grassy areas where geese forage. In some highly sensitive areas, such as the Daycare Center, we can evict badly behaving nesters forcibly. We should always keep in mind that we are justifiably proud of Fermilab's friendly relationship with nature. And nature is not always as convenient, pristine, or safe as we might like.
