Fermilab Barn Dance Celebrates 25 Years | ||

The Fermilab Folk Club and Fox Valley Folklore Society will celebrate 25 years of Fermilab barn dances at their next two events: April 11 at 6:30 p.m. and April 18 at 2:00 p.m. at the Warrenville Community Building.
"Dave and Betty Hansen held a single dance at the Kuhn Village Barn in 1979," said Lynn Garren, who heads the Fermilab Folk Club with Dave Harding. "It went so well that they started a series." The barn dances have been open to the public since the series began, and held in Warrenville since October 2001. Each event features live music from a Chicago-area band and a caller for the contra, square and circle dances that are performed. All ages and experience levels are welcome.
Admission for all barn dances is $5 for adults, $2 for ages 12-18 and free for children under 12. Contact Lynn Garren or Dave Harding for more information.

Fermilab Design: Past, Present and Future Fermilab's Legendary Mark | ||

The Fermilab mark has been the laboratory's core graphic identity for more than 36 years. Designed by Angela Gonzales and Robert Wilson to capture the essence of the young laboratory, the mark premiered in the National Accelerator Laboratory's 1968 Design Report and has remained a constant as the laboratory has evolved.
"The mark is timeless," said Fred Ullrich, manager of Visual Media Services and a member of the Design Task Force subcommittee for graphic standards, working to formalize the original dimensions and proportions of the design, and to establish guidelines for its use. The mark represents two types of beamline magnets constrained within a circle, and its specifications are laid out in a detailed technical drawing from the late 60s. The curved lines represent the quadrupole magnets used to focus beams of particles, while the straight lines represent the aperture of dipole magnets that are used for beam steering. The Fermilab logo is defined as the historic mark plus the word "Fermilab" in a distinct relationship, as represented at the top of Fermilab Today and the new Fermilab home page.

Meet with Members of the Director Search Committee | ||

The Fermilab Director Search Committee will hold its next meeting at Fermilab on April 15-16. The Committee has scheduled a series of interviews with members of the Fermilab community to get their views on the search, including the highest-priority characteristics to be sought in the next director. A limited number of additional laboratory community members can meet individually with subgroups of the Search Committee on Thursday, April 15. The 10-minute meetings will be held between 5:45 - 6:45 p.m. in several meeting rooms in Wilson Hall. If you wish to participate, please sign up in advance by sending a message as soon as possible to Jean Boutchyard in the URA Headquarters Office. Committee members will be able to meet with the first 36 people who sign up.
Since it might be impossible to schedule interviews with all people who desire to meet with the Committee, the Committee encourages members of the lab community to provide their views and candidate nominations in confidence via e-mail at search@ura.nw.dc.us, or via the "Comments" section of the Search website. In addition, six members of the Search Committee are on the Fermilab staff, and you may wish to contact one of them to schedule a brief meeting at a mutually convenient time.
