DASTOW, Earth Day Set for Thursday, April 22 | ||

Fermilab's annual Daughters and Sons to Work (DASTOW) and Earth Day
activities will again celebrate the lab's valued connections with
employees and their families on Thursday, April 22.
The Roads and Grounds Department will sponsor its annual Earth Day tree planting and a picnic lunch beginning at 11:30 a.m., so plan to bring your work clothes and your appetite. There will also be a hot dog lunch available in the Wilson Hall cafeteria for those who prefer dining indoors. As a special treat, following the annual group picture at 9 a.m., the introduction to the day's activities will feature an expanded version of Tom Peterson's "The Butterflies of Fermilab," in Ramsey Auditorium. Highlights of the day include a special rescue re-enactment by the Fermilab Fire Department, the Cryogenics Show with Jerry Zimmerman in Ramsey Auditorium, and the buffalo pasture visit with herdsman Don Hanson. These events are open to all comers, and special DASTOW buses will provide transportation. Peter Kasper's Early Bird Walk kicks off the day at 7:30 a.m. The Bird Walk is a sign-up event, and space is very limited. We also ask you to sign in ahead of time for the cafeteria lunch, just so we have an approximate count for ordering hot dogs.
Remember, the No.1 priority for DASTOW and Earth Day is for everyone to have a safe day.

DOE Press Release, April 5, 2004 DOE Office of Science Reorganization Announced WASHINGTON, DC – The Director of the Department of Energy’s Office of Science (SC), Dr. Raymond L. Orbach, has announced the official launch of a new complex-wide organizational structure. The new structure eliminates a layer of management, redefines roles and responsibilities for headquarters and field managers and clarifies lines of authority and accountability. The reorganization will “take the Office of Science into the 21st century as an efficient, high-performing organization that continues to produce great science and real benefits for the American people,” Orbach said.
“With this action, the Office of Science takes the Department of Energy another step forward in bringing the department into alignment with the President’s Management Agenda and making the Office of Science, an outstanding national resource, more responsive and better able to produce results that meet national needs,” Secretary of Energy Spencer Abraham said.

Experimental Astrophysics Group Releases 6 Terabytes of
SDSS Data to the Public | ||

On March 15, the Sloan Digital Sky Survey made its
second data release (DR2) available to the public.
The SDSS will
ultimately survey nearly one quarter of the night sky and really consists of
two surveys. First, it is taking images and cataloging all objects
detected on them. Then, spectra of one million galaxies, 100,000
quasars, as well as stars in the Milky Way are obtained, both to
obtain their distances and to study their composition.
The survey is unique in more than one respect. It is the first optical survey of a large fraction of the sky using CCD cameras instead of photographic plates. The data are completely digital from observing to publication on the web. This means much better signal-to-noise and much more homogeneous data than any previous survey, and easier access both for collaboration members and the public. Fermilab and the Experimental Astrophysics Group play an important role within the SDSS collaboration, which includes a total of 13 institutions. EAG computing professionals run the data processing pipelines on Fermilab computer farms. Current and past EAG astronomers and posdtocs have contributed significantly to the design of the entire survey. They currently monitor the quality of the data, run a helpdesk for users and, of course, analyze data. EAG astronomers are now planning future surveys that will investigate the dark energy. | ||
