Spring Birds Visit Fermilab | ||

On Wednesday morning, March 24, Peter Kasper spotted a bird that hasn't
been sighted at Fermilab in at least 17 years. One male Long-Tailed
Duck was swimming with a group of Lesser Scaups in Main Ring Lake.
"Seeing Long-Tailed Ducks inland is very unusual," said Kasper, an Accelerator Division staff member and avid birdwatcher. "One was seen on the Fox River last year and it created a lot of excitement." Sandhill Cranes, a species threatened in the state of Illinois, have also been spotted recently. The cranes often fly over Fermilab as they migrate from wintering grounds in Florida and Texas to breeding grounds in the north. Occasionally they can be seen landing on site.
"March is an excellent month for seeing waterfowl at Fermilab,"
said Kasper. March is Fermilab's peak month for spring migrations
of waterfowl such as Long-Tailed Ducks. The best places to spot birds
on site in March and April are Main Ring Lake and Lake Law.

From the Daily Herald, March 28, 2004 Getting to know Fermilab By Amanda Vinicky There are a lot of myths about Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory. One is that nuclear warheads and missiles secretly come in by the truckload overnight. Another suggests that "mole people" live in subterranean tunnels beneath the Batavia facility. Edi Eckley, a former hairdresser whose Warrenville home backs up to the lab, has heard them all. She didn't necessarily believe them. A client who worked at Fermilab had assured Eckley she was "not going to be radioactive," but Eckley didn't know exactly what did go on at the U.S. Department of Energy lab.
"Most people don't know anything about (Fermilab) at all. They just know it's a good place to ride their bikes," Eckley said.

The DOE Facility Operations Review, March 16-18, was the first of its kind for us. The review covered most of our operations: accelerators, research, business and finance, infrastructure and ES&H, and management. The accelerator subcommittee found that "priorities are properly established" and the "focus of the laboratory is consistent with priorities." The management subcommittee said "improvements in Run II operations are encouraging" and that "the Run II organization is quite effective." The reviewers agreed with us that the main risks to future success are aging infrastructure and the effects of flat budgets. The committee gave special praise to safety practices throughout the laboratory and the "strong safety culture at FNAL." The DOE Annual Program Review, March 23-25, reviewed all aspects of the scientific program, with an agenda similar to the URA Visiting Committee review two weeks earlier. The Program Review made use of the findings of the preceding reviews of Run II and of facility operations and affirmed many of the points they had made. The reviewers toured the NuMI project and gave credit to NuMI's leadership for bringing that difficult project to the present status, only months from completion. The committee also praised the research done by Fermilab staff, from theoretical physics and astrophysics to accelerator R&D.
Collectively, the review committees gave great credit to the dedication of the Fermilab staff and to the high quality of work across the laboratory-in other words, to you.
