Spring Prairie Burn Season in Full Swing Monday morning at about 10:30 a.m., columns of smoke began to rise from the northeast quadrant of the main ring. The third of Fermilab's spring prairie burns was underway; 10 Roads and Grounds employees were setting the back burns that would help keep the fire within its designated area. "Everyone has radios, fire prevention suits and training," said Mike Becker of Roads and Grounds. "We have people with almost 25 years of experience in controlled prairie burns." The spring prairie burn season usually begins in March, but this year the first controlled burn took place in February due to the unusually warm and dry weather. Becker hopes that five more controlled burns can be completed before April 15, when the burn season ends to protect ground-nesting birds.
Controlled burns are necessary to keep the prairie healthy.
Native plant species have extensive root systems that
allow them to survive the fires, unlike invasive non-native plants.
The fires also clear away overgrowth, leaving room for the next
generation of plants to sprout.

Brookhaven Press Release, March 23, 2004 Physicists See Golden Needle in a Micro-Cosmic Haystack UPTON, NY — An international team of physicists examining an extremely rare form of subatomic particle decay — a veritable golden needle in a micro-cosmic haystack of 7.8 trillion candidates — has discovered evidence for the highly sought process, which could be an indication of new forces beyond those incorporated in the Standard Model of particle physics. That long-standing theory of all particle physics precisely predicts the rate of such decays to be half that observed by the experimenters although it is still too soon to say if a deviation has occurred. The innovative experiment, which uses the most comprehensive particle detector ever built, is located at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Brookhaven National Laboratory. The result is being presented at a colloquium at Brookhaven Lab today and has been submitted to Physical Review Letters. read more |

TV Star Joins Fermilab Fire Department | ||

If you think Regis Philbin, David Letterman and Jennifer Aniston
are big television stars, you haven't seen the newest addition
to the Fermilab Fire Department. Standing about 10 feet high and
weighing 15 tons including equipment, the star of the NBC drama
"Third Watch" that arrived at Fermilab earlier this month dwarfs
even Letterman. It's a 1999 E-One Sentry II Rescue Pumper, a
combination fire engine and rescue vehicle.
The engine was originally a demonstrator vehicle used by E-One, Inc. for sales purposes and was later used in "Third Watch." Steinhoff discovered the engine while looking for a slightly used vehicle to upgrade Fermilab's fire-fighting fleet. "The new engine was bought to downsize the fire department fleet and provide more efficient emergency services. It replaced both a 1981 fire engine and a 1990 rescue squad vehicle and was available at a significantly lower price than a brand-new rescue engine," said Jack Steinhoff, Fermilab's Fire Chief.
The engine retains several of the graphics from its
"Third Watch" days, including "never forget 9-11-01"
painted on the windshield and "F.D.N.Y" on the drivers' side.
