In Memoriam: Carmenita Moore
Carmenita Moore
Carmenita Moore
Carmenita Moore, a member of the Database Software group in the Computing Division, died on Sunday, March 21, after a long battle with cancer.

An employee of 18 years, Moore spent most of her career working on data acquisition systems for the fixed target experiments and more recently on SAM database development for Run II. While working on the data acquisition systems, Moore served as an online liaison. "She was the main interface between the Computing Division and designated fixed target experiments," said Margaret Votava, a member of the Computing Division who worked closely with Moore. "She was extremely conscientious and very interested in helping the experiments." Eileen Berman, of the Computing Division, described Moore as a very pleasant and positive person. "She was one of the most positive people I had ever met. She was always willing to help," Berman said.

Moore, who started as a summer intern at Fermilab in 1982, dedicated a lot of her time to working with students and served as a mentor in the Graduate Engineering for Minorities program and the Summer Internships in Science and Technology for Minority Students program. "She was very strong in mentoring other students. Every year kids would come through," Votava said. Moore was a very active member of her church and a foster parent to two young children.

Visitation will be today from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Gatlins Funeral Home, 10133 S. Halsted in Chicago. The funeral will be on Saturday, March 27, at Pretlow and Son, 500 Liberty Street, Chesapeake, Virginia. Flowers are welcome; contact Eileen Berman if you would like to make a contribution.

Pinpointing the forces of nature
by Gala Pierce
About 10 years ago, Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory physicists conceived of an experiment with mysterious fundamental particles called neutrinos.

Although theorized in the 1930s, their existence wasn't proven until 1962. And even then, little was known.

While the sun constantly bathes us in these particles, scientists have been mystified how neutrinos often disappear during long journeys.

Director's Corner
Good Morning!
Mike Witherell
On March 10, the NuMI/MINOS project received beneficial occupancy of the MINOS service buildings and the last parts of the NuMI tunnels from the construction company Ragnar, Benson, Inc. This completes the execution of the large construction contracts, a process which started almost four years ago with the award of the first contract. I congratulate everybody on the NuMI team who has contributed to achieving this major milestone.

The NuMI project will keep up its rapid pace toward completion. In the future you may see some pieces of the thousand-ton "near detector" being moved from the New Muon Laboratory to the shaft just south of Pine street. There they will be lowered 350 feet below ground level to be installed in the MINOS hall. A great deal of other installation activity will be going on at the same time in the underground target hall and in various accelerator enclosures.

We are still looking forward to first neutrinos to MINOS in early 2005, marking the start of a new era for the U.S. neutrino program.

Website for Information on Fermilab Director Search
The URA and the Fermilab Director Search Committee have established a website for information on the search process, Committee membership, and ways to send communications to the Committee. The website can also be visited from a permanent link on the Fermilab homepage, in the "News at Fermilab" box. The director search website will be mentioned next month in announcements to the physics community and in classified advertisements in CERN Courier, Physics Today, and Science.
