Fermilab's Meteorological Station Measures Record Wind Gust
Weather Station
Fermilab's meteorological station is located in a field east of the New Muon Laboratory and north of Wilson Street. (Click on image for larger version.)
How windy was it on Friday, March 12, 2004? Just ask Geoff Eargle of ES&H.

"The Fermilab Meteorological Station recorded a maximum 'burst' wind speed of 60.1 mph on March 12, beating the previous Fermilab record of 58.3 mph recorded May 18, 1997," said Eargle. The record-setting wind gust didn't help the average 17.7 mph wind speed for March 12 surpass the current record of 25.6 mph set on May 11, 2003, however.

The Fermilab Meteorological Station, a 30-foot high tower located in a field east of the New Muon Laboratory and north of Wilson Street, started operating in 1994. The station is completely solar powered and measures temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction, precipitation, and solar radiation.

"The station was originally installed to comply with Clean Air Act regulations," said Eargle. The station provides weather information used in reporting to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, precipitation data to construction managers working on the Fermilab site, and current conditions to everyone through the Weather at Fermilab Web site. Fermilab's Meteorological Station does not provide official data to the National Weather Service.

Key House Appropriations Hearing for DOE Office of Science
The bottom line from yesterday's ninety-minute House appropriations subcommittee hearing on the Department of Energy's Office of Science budget request was expressed early in Chairman Hobson's opening remarks, and it was not encouraging. After saying that the Office of Science supported some of the most important work in the Department of Energy, and that it would be one of his priorities if he had more money, the chairman made a discouraging prediction. Explaining that the full House was now working on a budget resolution that would freeze discretionary spending in the next fiscal year, Hobson told the DOE witnesses that finding money above the Administration's request would be very difficult, and warned that the final appropriation might be even less than what the Administration requested. That FY 2005 request for the Office of Science is a cut of 2.0% or $68.5 million from the current year budget of $3,500.2 million.

Director's Corner
Lockout/Tagout Correction
For the past several weeks, the "Safety Tip of the Week" has been featured every Monday in Fermilab Today. The members of ES&H,
Danger
The "Danger" tag
that is not to
be used with LOTO
who write the column every week, appreciate all of the positive feedback that they have received. ES&H also occasionally receives comments about the column that point out errors or terms that need to be clarified. Such an error was pointed out in the article on Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) that ran in Fermilab Today on March 1. The tag used in LOTO is a "Danger - Do Not Operate" tag, not the "Danger" tag displayed in the story.

Fermilab has many hazardous energy sources with the potential for causing harm. For this reason,
Do Not Operate
The "Danger - Do Not
Operate" tag for the
LOTO program
it is extremely important that employees follow the established LOTO program. The program uses Red locks and "Danger - Do Not Operate" tags exclusively to signify when LOTO has been applied. These are only to be removed by the employee who places them on the energy source. No other kinds of locks or tags are used with LOTO. The "Danger" tag is used to identify hazardous situations, but is not to be used with LOTO.

If you would like to suggest a subject for an article or submit an article for the Safety Tip of the Week, please contact Tim Miller.

Have a great day and let's work safely all week!
