Needed: Objects for Display

You might think of it as junk from an old Fermilab experiment or some spare equipment sitting in storage. But think again. Why not put the hidden treasures on display where they might catch some "ooohs" and "aaahs" from visitors who may have never seen anything like them?

The Office of Public Affairs is asking for your help to identify objects that illustrate Fermilab's story. From tiny to huge, from cheap to expensive, from visually appealing to scientifically or historically important, all kinds of objects are being considered for both indoor and outdoor display. Public Affairs has begun to create a list of artifacts, ranging from small silicon detector components to the 15-foot bubble chamber. However, the list is far from complete. If you have any suggestions or information on potential display objects, please send an email to Kurt Riesselmann.

Sloan Digital Sky Survey Releases Six Terabytes of Data to Public

One of the largest astronomy catalogs ever compiled was released to the public today by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS).

With photometric and spectroscopic observations of the sky gathered during the last two years, this second data release (DR2) offers six terabytes of images and catalogs, including two terabytes in an easy to use searchable database.

Fermilab Awards Food Contract to New Cafeteria Vendor
As of April 16, Fermilab's current cafeteria vendor, Eurest Operations, will cease operations. Fermilab awarded the new contract to Southern Foodservice Management. Even though the management will change, all current Eurest employees at Fermilab will be given the opportunity to apply for jobs with Southern. Jack Hawkins, Head of Fermilab's Accommodations Office, said, "Southern is familiarizing themselves with the lab's procedures right now - from contractor safety training to getting badges. The main objective is to have a smooth transition."

Fermilab Colloquium Today

Ajit Varki

Ajit Varki, of the University of San Diego, will present "Genetic Differences Between Great Apes and Humans: Implications for Human Evolution" today at 4:00 p.m. in One West. Varki's talk will focus on the differences between apes and humans. "I heard Varki speak at a conference in Australia a couple of years ago, and found the topic to be fascinating," said Dick Carrigan of the Accelerator Division. "He has a very interesting story to tell." Tomorrow's colloquium can be considered a companion talk to Spencers Wells' colloquium, "The Journey of Man: A Genetic Odyssey," which he gave at Fermilab on February 25. Carrigan explained that Varki's colloquium may be slightly more technical.

The Fermilab Association of Rocketry is having its monthly club meeting on March 17, 2004 at 5:00 p.m. in the lower level of the village barn. We will also have one of our winter building sessions after the meeting. If you have something you want to build, bring it with you. Or just come, hang out and talk about rockets!
