Volunteers Needed for Local Girl Scout Event | |

Local Girl Scout troops need Fermilab scientists
to volunteer at a science and math badge workshop on Saturday, April 3.
The workshop
will be from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Joliet Junior College, and lunch
will be provided. Volunteers will help first through twelfth graders with
various science and math activities, which will be set up ahead of time.
If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Anne Lucietto by
Wednesday, March 17.

From Nature, March 11, 2004 Letter from Marburger: US science has never been more coherent Sir – Your Editorial "Budget let-downs" (Nature 427, 571; 2004) paints a picture of US science funding that differs astoundingly from reality. The trajectory of R&D growth that you call "lacklustre" has risen more rapidly during the past four years than at any time in the past three decades: an average of 10% per year under the current administration. At US$132 billion, the proposed 2005 R&D budget is at an all-time high and consumes a greater fraction of the domestic discretionary budget than at any time since the height of the Apollo space programme.

Dan Jackson retires this week after 26 years in the Fermilab
Fire Department. Jackson began his firefighting career
as a volunteer in Bensenville (while he worked for American Airlines--
where he could fly to Hawaii first-class for $35.) After
leaving American he took a test and became a full
member of the Bensenville force. From there he jumped to Fermilab.
Fires at Fermilab are rare, but the 19-member Fermilab team (with six people working per shift) gets calls daily from Batavia, Warrenville, North Chicago, and Aurora. They also train daily-- both practical and classroom work--and conduct monthly inspections of all the buildings. They all have EMT and hazmat training, which they use frequently. "There's always something new," Jackson said. "Different equipment, different procedures. We gotta keep on top of it."
Jackson, who still lives in Bensenville, hopes to spend more time
traveling in his motorhome in retirement. In the last five years,
he's been to every continental state.
