Laboratory Services Section Celebrates Safety Milestone | ||

On Tuesday, the Laboratory Services Section celebrated two years without a lost day of work to injury. Director Michael Witherell congratulated the section, which contains 85 people making up 11 departments and services, including Accommodations, Benefits, and Education. "On one hand, statistics are good," Witherell said, "but what's important is that we go home safe to our families. Keep up the good work."
"The [safety] culture has really taken hold in the lab," added Association Director for Administration Bruce Chrisman. Kay Van Vreede, head of LSS, and Jack Hawkins, LSS Senior Safety Officer, have instituted a practice of frequent "walkthroughs" to look for dangerous situations and talk to people about their concerns. Hawkins has found over the years that one of the riskiest jobs at the lab is actually day care. Any parent of a toddler will know that tackling tikes all day beats up a body. Van Vreede says that the LSS safety committee is "particularly active." The SHOE Committee's name, which officially stands for Safety, Health, or Environment, is generally taken by LSS members to mean something more potent: Safety Happens Or Else. | ||

Fermilab Barnstormers' Contest Tonight | ||

The annual Fermilab Barnstormers' Delta Dart Indoor Model Airplane
contest is tonight at 7:00 p.m. in the Village Barn. Entry is $1.00 for adults and
free for those 12 years old and
younger. This event is only for the Fermilab
community (close family and friends). To enter the contest, please
arrive promptly at 5:30 p.m. to allow enough time to
build your "world-beater" model before flying it to
fame and fortune. The actual flying contest will begin at approximately
7:00 p.m., giving the contestant plenty of time to test fly and trim (and possibly
repair) the model. Expert building and flying assistance will be
available from the knowledgeable members of the Fermilab Barnstormers.
All materials are provided by the club. Come and have fun! More information
about the contest is available on the Fermilab Barnstormers' website.
Due to Fermilab's current security policy,
employees will need to make arrangements for their parties to get into
the lab.

From the New York Times, March 9, 2004 Choose Me, Japan and France Say as They Court Big Fusion Project by Norimitsu Onishi ROKKASHO, Japan — If the Japanese have their way, this village in northern Japan, an area known for its apples and sea cucumbers, will become home to a project that could give birth to the energy of the future. The project, ITER, for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor, would try to emulate the sun's nuclear fusion to produce safe, clean and inexhaustible energy. The 30-year, $12 billion research center would be the second largest international scientific project after the International Space Station.
Officials from six countries participating in the project are to meet in March to try to decide between Rokkasho and Cadarache, in southern France, even as talks have become increasingly tinged with politics.

FYI: AIP Bulletin of Science Policy News, March 8, 2004 Science Committee Praises and Criticizes FY 2005 S&T Request 
On March 4, the House Science Committee released a 14-page review of
President Bush's FY 2005 request for key science and technology programs. These "Views and Estimates" are intended to guide the House Budget Committee, and Congress more generally, in making funding decisions for the fiscal year that starts on October 1.
About half of the committee members signed this document. As expected, the percentage was higher for Republican members (70%) than Democratic members (30%). The committee's new Ranking Minority Member, Bart Gordon (Tennessee) signed these Views and Estimates, as did six other Democrats.
